So sorry he turned out to be a jerk (you say in your letter that he was 'a jerk'). Unfortunately there is a spiritual reason why you went through what you did.
You are not meant to know everything, otherwise you wouldn't make the choices you have made to get to this point, and although you are upset about the choices, there are some very good reasons why you have had to travel down this path.
Relax your hold on the control you feel with knowing who you will marry.
