Hey cool. I can see a direction you are going in. Have you checked out the patterns on old Ukioye (Japanese woodblock) prints. Check out the treatment of the patterns of kimonos juxtaposed together (kimonos are worn layered). The quickest way to look at a variety of sources is to go to ebay and put in a search for Ukioye. It kind of reminds me a little of your seahorses. You may be able to mine that for ideas or get some inspiration from that.
