No matter if she gives him a Bow Flex, or he gives her a Pier One chair, if the gratitude is not there, someone is going to feel burned if the gift is not appreciated. Have you ever received a Christmas gift from someone you wished wouldn’t have? Have you ever given a Christmas gift to make someone like you more? It’s a sad truth but a necessary lesson we all must learn.

A young woman wanted the love of a new man she became obcessed with. When he mentioned one night in bed that he wanted a Harley, she ran out the next day and bought it for him. Her credit card maxed out....she thought it would be worth it to see the love and rapture in his eyes for her. On Christmas morning there was the beautiful bike…delivered on his door step. Totally flabbergasted with the inappropriateness of her expensive gift, he never even called her to say thanks. We all sat in a circle with our lunch the day he pulled up on his dream machine and informed her he was moving to another state. “Hay! Thanks for the bike!” She watched him ride away, and lurched over to vomit. We felt sick for her.
Thankfully, every disaster is a stepping stone to wisdom.

He talked and listened to the marriage problems of a sad young woman every day. Secretly he loved her, and wished she could see it in his eyes. Before Christmas he bought her 3 beautiful expensive gifts, knowing her husband would forget her. He was shocked when she seemed embarrassed and acted uncomfortable with the gifts he spent so long picking out just for her. He didn’t realize his gifts would sabotage what warmth she had for him. From that day on, she avoided him. Thankfully, every disaster is a stepping stone to wisdom.

Two best friends were forced to move away because of life chapters, and swore they would never forget each other. One friend continued to over spend, sending gifts through the mail not only at Christmas, but for birthdays and in-between. Over giving was her pattern. Her greatest fear was being forgotten. Though the other friend loved receiving her gifts, she couldn't see keeping up. It just wasn't necesary to her. Phone calls and cards felt more comfortable. In time, the gift giving friend saw she was giving more then she got back in return. What she did not realize is that she unintentionally set herself up to feel burned over and over with people. The friend that loved her wondered what she had done wrong. Suddenly her gift giving friend became cold.
CURB YOUR DESIRE TO OVER GIVE WITH MATERIAL GIFTS
- If the bond is in question, do not give expensive or multiple gifts.
- Never over spend to show your love.
- Try not to “out do” a friends gift. It won’t feel friendly.
- To give is beautiful. A listening ear, warm bonding, a card, coffee and dinner, often keep the freindship alive with out feeling competitive or uncomfortable.
