When a Dog Dies

Jazz, my Golden Retriever, was put to sleep yesterday.  Her eyes told me "let me die."   She was so sick.  She crossed over at home, on a beautiful spring day.  The Buddhist chimes were ringing, and she was on the porch, facing East in the sun rays.  I think she was dreaming about running out the door.  She died peacefully with the gentle hands of an awesome Dr, his sweet nurse, and mine comforting her.  The  last thing she heard was the Dr saying,  "shhhhhhhh"

I haven't stopped crying for hours.   Kevin and Chanook, her Siberian/Wolf mate, are so sad. I wrote this for Jazz.

MESSAGES

 She picked herself up

old and bony

and lay down

facing east in

the morning rays

that flooded down

on the porch.

The Buddhist chimes

rang and beckoned

her to run in

the sunshine of a

beautiful Spring

prairie day.

God umbrellaed the

the lane she died.

The land comforted her,

whispering, "shhhhhhh,"

and her spirit bound

out the screen door,  free.

Jazzies ashes will buried at the base of the 10 foot Maple tree monument I had carved last year for her and my other rescued pets of animal abuse.

The nice thing is she will be right next to her kennel and back yard.

Oh Sister I am so glad that she is free again.  I can relate so well to this story for our old dog "slough" who was a black lab, pitbull mix was our life companion and when she passed over I thought I had lost the best friend of my life and I cried and sobbed for days.  I know that you will have her with you in your heart, memories and visions forever so do not despair.  Many blessings to you and Jazzie.

Thank you sweetie, thank you.   I`m supposed to read for a spiritual expo this weekend and I am so red and from crying. The tears just keep coming.  Strange how a pet can tear you up so much.  This blog is a healing. Like I wish she could read it.

On putting animals to sleep?  I would feel blessed if I had terminal pain and it could be relieved as gently and quicly as Jazz left.

So sorry to hear about Jazz...

I recall having to say goodbye to my furry friend Loki last Dec.  They 'know' when its time to go and its up to us (their human) to let go and let it happen.

I have a friend who refuses to 'let go' and its so sad to watch her 18 yr old dog wobble around in pain...so Jazz is lucky to have someone like you who listens with her heart and heard his wishes.

Hugs to you,

In the wild, animals do not survive that are like Jazz.  Nature swiftly ends thier lives when broken, wounded, or so old.

{As the Dog Whisperer says in his book} PEOPLE kill this natural ability to let go "with love".  We project our human refusal to let go, on to an old or terminal pet, and imagine our fear of death is theirs.

AGAIN.  CRIPPELED OLD OR TERMINALY ILL BEYOND QUALITY OF LIFE are the reasons i give to put an animal to sleep.  If we are to be in charge, we need to respect also an animal’s right to die; Even though we die a little inside to let them go.

I am so sorry for your loss. I love my dogs too and 3 years ago I had to make a swift decision to put down my dog. It was his second bout of cancer and this time his liver was attacked. I had made myself a promise that should the cancer reoccur, I would not put him through any more surgeries. It hit him so quickly. It still hurts. I do understand your loss and emptiness. I hope that you will heal from the loss. And remember that in time many of the memories you will have of her will bring a smile to your face every time.

Dearest Sister Othella,

I am so sorry.  "The decision" is one of the most loving things a pet owner must face someday.  I still miss all of my "babies" who've passed.

Please know that you will see her again.

I know it's difficult.
I'm sorry.

God bless you and hold Jazzie in His loving arms until you meet again.

Your beloved Jazz loved (loves) you more than you know. God bless you for taking care of him to the end. And may the angels comfort you in your time of grief.

Thank you for all these beautiful comments.  I treasure your well wishes.  I spent the weekend in a healing retreat away from home.  Many hugs, like these comments, helped the loss.  The crazy thing is as I drove the car, it was as if she was sitting right next to me, pink tongue happily lolling out with her silly dog "bye-bye" grin.

This morning I pick up Jazz's ashes.  My husband said to me before he went to work, "Going Anywhere?"
"Bringing Jazzie Home"  I answered back.
A friend gave me a beautiful box with a woman embracing a Golden Retriever, painted on the lid.

I will place her ashes in this box, and wait until Spring when I can plant it in the ground with the tulips, at the base of her monument.
