Honesty # 4 The True Meaning Of Spirituality

When I was in chiro school, I just hated the term spirituality. There were so many of my fellow peers who claimed to be spiritual that were some of the most difficult people to deal with. Therefore, I had a bad taste in my mouth about spirituality. I saw people use the phrase " I am spiritual " as if they were better than, more enlightened, more wise, etc. Some of the meanest people were touting this attitude. So I decided that if this is spirituality than YUCK! It felt bad. It was a sanctomonious attitude that did not feel good.

Then I met nicer spiritual people who were just too weird for me. Every sentence included the word " peace, love, let go, yada yada yada". So I thought that these people were too extreme and were also sampling the herb you know too much hemp in their system.

I just totally thought why is this need to investigate spirituality is coming up over and over and all I see is extremism. I am a truth seeker and I guess my spirit wanted to know the truth. I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT!!

WHAT IS REAL SPIRITUALITY?.....................

THE ANSWER IS............ SELF HELP, SELF AWARENESS, SELF LOVE, SELF RESPECT AND ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS WITHOUT JUDGEMENT

That is the answer that I found through this journey. Spirituality is not a religion, one belief or a sanctimonious mindset. It is the desire to really peel off the layers of oneself and dig deep to see what remains. What is the true essence of your being. We are wrapped in life experiences of pain, love, blame, disappointment, judgement, being a victim, etc. The goal is to peel off each layer and to really let go of the junk that interferes with who you really are suppose to be. The truth is that when we live with the belief that someone is responsible for our happiness or someone else needs to change, we are in denial. IT IS ALL ABOUT US BECOMING A BETTER BEING. A being free of needing to put more layers of unhealthy emotions on to cover up the past wounds. Spirituality is about freedom. It is the letting go of what does not serve your life. It is saying goodbye to anything, any experience that is holding you back.

Another misunderstanding with spirituality is this need to judge people and try to lead them in the " right " direction. What is the right direction? Who determines that? When a person is truly spiritual, they are able to spend the time working on themselves and staying away from judgement of others. Spirituality is learning that life is a journey full of lesson and growth. There is no right or wrong just growth.

Spiritual people may swear, or even have a bad day. It is all normal and part of the journey. Spirituality is not about perfection. Perfection is not reality. It is a sad illusion that creates misery in a person's life by trying to live up to rediculous and unrealistic standards.

Dear Amy,
Thank you so much for your comment. I think that the reason why so many people avoid spirituality is because they feel like they have to  " perfect " and love everybody all the time. My firned said if best the other day. She said how can she love everyone all the time when she does not like herself all the time.
I hope people learn to chill and just enjoy self growth with out the pressure.

I love reading your blogs. You always make sense and when I read them there is always something that I can take away from them.
Thank You for being the self aware, self assured being that you are.

Thank you for writing from your heart and wow just like your guidance in teaching us "to let go of what does not serve us" and that "Spirituality is learning that life is a journey of lessons and growth" and that "there is no right or wrong growth".. I'm now coming to understand.. as always your blogs shine a light in the darkness that we sometimes travel and you allow us to see what is right there in front of us.. Thank you Dr. Donna!!!

Julie,
Thank you so much for reading my blog. I think that I will repost this one. I think that spirituality is a great journey. It is sometimes painful because of the growing pains. The outcome is worth it.

Donna,

I have always seen Spirituality as a personal thing.  I don't like the "This is Right, this is Wrong" view of spirituality.  You are so right, it IS about discovering yourself.  Maybe the same thing lies within all of us, maybe not...but that is for the individual to decide.

I could never imagine telling some WHAT spirituality IS, and certainly never judging another who has a different view (within social tolerance, of course.)  That would be like me going to Starbucks and telling everyone that my Triple Venti Soy, No-Foam latte with Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice is the ONLY drink to have, and anyone who does not drink it is going to burn in hell.  *I* don't even LIKE those anymore.  ;-)

Great blog.  I'm glad you made me read it (Kidding, just trying to start gossip)

Hugs,
H

My Dearest Mathie,
I have felt that this blog (gossip) was necessary because I had somany callers who were misunderstanding spirituality. I had to remind them that it is not a quest for perfection. There are no " masters " or  "teachers" in spirituality. We are all students. Everyday is a fine opportunity to learn not preach. If you are teaching spirituality to a group, you are really sharing your philosophy. One's view does not make it truth. There are many truths and we shall respect all of them. Mathie you and I can have our pretent politic bashings still. LOL!!!
