The Art of “Effective Communication”
“ A smile speaks louder than words,- Silence speaks wonders”
Everyday we communicate with many aspects of our body and spirit. It is easy to forget that our arms and legs and head and everything else sets a tone, and gives a message.
There are many sorts of messages that fly past us, and by us everyday. Messages of love, kindness, healing, hate, anger... the list can go on and on.
What are you and I trying to communicate today?
Hmmm well lest just think about it. Is it being handled well in our daily world ?
I like to take a simple example of these rather interesting political figures.
There is always a promise us a better life; and yet they yell and scream from their podiums. They run the next man down and never address how to eradicate problems and bring about solutions. So how does their message sound to me ( just to me, please note ) it is contradictory and rhetorical, and most of the time I never listen.
If they want my help I prefer them speak to me about good intentions. Speak to be about how in simple ways we can make this situation better. Stand tall and strong in their shoes and speak for themselves. Their beliefs and their vision. What is their dream??? I would love to hear it.!!!!
Such is a art of non communication . When all I hear is a message of ridicule and anger. There is no healing and moving forward in that.
So I have been contemplating on a few ways you and I can bring about “Effective communication” into our lives.
RUNNING SOMEONE DOWN AIN'T FIXING A PROBLEM
No one likes to be told that they are wrong. Even though they may be wrong . A wise teacher once said. “Focus on the solution not the problem.”
So it is better for you and me to suggest a better way or even another way of handling the problem.
SPEAK KINDLY, and CLEARLY.
Yelling at the top of our lungs is only a waste of great energy, and is a fuel to great stress. Most of the time you will not be even heard !!!! No one wants to listen to someone that is yelling or whining all the time.
It is like the dog next door. When he does not stop his yelping and wining you want to just smack him to size. - I do anyway. :) and I love dogs .
TRY NOT TO CROSS YOUR HANDS OVER YOUR CHEST
The way we stand and speak has great effect of how we are received. Covering your body with your arms will only create a barrier between you and the other person. Drop your hands and take a deep breath.
For me, I listen more to those who make creatively good and wise suggestions. Yelling just gets on my nerves. So keep the voice in a place where there is a sense of harmony created. Speak your truth kindly, not trying to belittle the person or persons who are around you
Appear to BE A GOOD LISTENER.
I find this sometimes hard to do since people have a tenancy to rattle on. and most of the time you already know what they are going to say.
However as a polite gesture let the other person speak for a while. If you feel they are going on and on down a lonely track gently raise your hand and say something like “ I get it” and then move on to the next matter. Firmly with some authority.
LISTEN TO YOUR FACE.
Funnily our faces communicate with others all the times. Feel if your face is it sad, angry happy.... are you smiling? frowning ? or are you so angry that your poor eyes are all red. :)
Specially if you are talking to a loved one, that would not be a very productive conversation. and if you are talking to your boss. You should totally take a water break.
Try to keep a moderate expression that is the best form of energy. you will be well received.
THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO SAY.
Think about your intent. Your words . How are you placing your point across. and constantly and gently come back to it. that way if they miss you once then they will hear you the 2nd time.
ALWAYS TAKE TIME TO ANSWER
Don’t yell back . Listen . Then reply.
Good luck with your world of great communication today.
Well wishes to all
