Catching turtles in the near by lake and selling them at the Ma & Pa store on the corner for $0.05
A group of us neighborhood kids picking berries (Black berries, Raspberries & selling them through the neighborhood door to door for $0.25 Pint.
Waiting for the community to drain the lake so we could walk around the cobblestone roads that were under the water searching for treasure.
Making go-carts to race and of course never having brakes on them.
Watching the neighbor’s dad chop the heads off chickens and freak when they ran all over the place headless.
We Rode our bikes and rode a friend or sibling either on the handlebars or crossbar and inedible crashing when the passenger on the bike flew off on to the road or in a ditch.
Catching Baby birds thinking they were safer in my house then in the nest outside.
Going on family trips to Florida and always bringing home a baby alligator, which ended up in the back yard in my ever-growing gator graveyard.
Camping out in the yard and waiting till our parent’s went to bed so we could sneak out and walk the neighborhood with flashlights giggling all the way.
Going trick or treating and going back home 3-4 times to change costumes to go back out and get more candy & the great part was it was dark out!
Going to the drive inn movies & backing the car into the parking spot (get those hiding in the trunk out) then sit in the trunk to watch the movie eating popcorn, pizza & drinking sodas.
Going to the lake in the winter to go ice-skating usually after dark with a big barrel on the edge of the lake with a fire in it to keep us warm.
There were times a skater would fall through the ice while we skated, thank goodness they were able to get out unhurt.
Dreading the “Perm” mom lined you all up for just before school started and of course the “homemade” clothes mom made you that just seemed to come unraveled as you walked down the halls at school “oh what fun”
Watching the “Wizard of Oz” yearly like it was the first time you ever saw it.
Watching American bandstand Saturday’s & only wishing & sometimes thinking you could be that cool.
When you were bad in school, you’d be taken out to the hall / or principles office for the dreaded “paddle” with the holes in it.
Going out to play in the summer from early morning until dinner most times forgetting about lunch unless it was a quick stop for a PBJ sandwich on the run. Then back out until the streetlights came on reminding you you’d better be home in your yard.
Going on hunting trips with dad in the back of the camper mounted on his truck in PA. Dad would find the deer shine a light on them for us to see them that was the extent of the hunt.
Playing endlessly with your invisible childhood friend(s)Going to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s anticipating the best food you could ever eat that Grandma cooked feeling it was only for you, her homemade breads, real butter and preserves, no body could cook like Granny!
Hearing the music from the "Popsicle Man" truck coming from a few streets away running screaming "POPSICLE MAN POPSICLE MAN" alerting our parents to our excitement.
Exploring the woods by the house and going to "Table Rock" & "Make out Rock" how funny to look back at that now.
Going to the other side of the lake to another lake and swearing we saw "Big Foot"
Fishing at the dam standing on the drainpipe catching mostly catfish & blue gale taking them home and cleaning and scaling to cook.
Catching the lightening bugs and pulling off their light to wear on our finger as a ring ~ ok that probably wasn't a cool thing to do but hey we were kids.
Freaking out as I sat in the grass at neighbors and while laughing a huge grasshopper jumped in my mouth and down my throat. YIKE!
Playing Marbles and while laying on the ground my sibling made a shot and drove a boulder down my throat, thank goodness it went straight down, yes everything came out in the end (smile)
