What should you do to balance your chakras? There are several ways to balance the chakras, which can result in more balance of those areas in your life. If your chakras have been out of balance, choked, or clogged for a long time, you will need to do this "cleaning" and "balancing" on a daily basis for at least three weeks, and then once weekly to keep them healthy.

Sit in a chair and relax or lay down, which ever position will be comfortable, but one you won't fall asleep in.

Staying still and relaxing - close your eyes concentrating on your breath.

*Focus on the base chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright red light spinning clockwise - as you focus on the base chakra - breathe in red - breathe out red. Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the sacral chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright orange light spinning clockwise - breathe in orange - breathe out orange Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the solar chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright yellow light spinning clockwise - breathe in yellow - breathe out yellow Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the heart chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright green light spinning clockwise - breathe in green - breathe out green Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the throat chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright blue light spinning clockwise - breathe in blue - breathe out blue Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the forehead chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright indigo light spinning clockwise - breathe in indigo - breathe out indigo Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

*Move to the crown chakra - visualize the chakra as a bright purple light spinning light spinning clockwise - breathe in purple breathe out purple Clean out mentally any debris, dust, negative energy, or other detrimental debris that may be there. Picture this chakra flowing cleanly and freely with this energy.  When you have finished with the root chakra, move some of the energy up

You will have seven spinning balls of energy in each of the chakra colors when you have finished this part of the exercise. Enjoy this feeling as long as you want to. Any extra energy that you feel, you may shoot out the top of your head like a waterfall, and let it fall down the outside of your body to also repair any holes and weak spots in your aura if you like. When you feel complete with this process, then move the energy back down each of the chakras in turn, in the reverse order that you opened them. This is just like a garage door, you open it to go in, closing it when you go out.

Another method of balancing the chakras involves sound. Each of the chakras has a Sanskrit name, a mantra name, and a musical note, among other things, that are associated with it and can be used to augment cleansing and balancing. Again you would find a comfortable position and breathe deeply. Now, focusing on the root chakra to start with, you would either intone the Sanskrit name, or the mantra name, that is associated with that chakra. If you can do so, it also helps to sing the name or sound on the musical note that is for that chakra as well. Some people will use a pitch pipe to do this, others may use tuning forks. You can also have someone do this for you using tuning forks that actually will vibrate right over each chakra. You would similarly visualize cleansing each one in turn as previously described. Remember to start always at the root chakra and work your way up, and then back down again, opening them on the way up and closing them again on the way down.  There are many associations for the chakras, and the table below has a few of them. You can use the gemstones in the same way as the notes, or the vowel sounds, by placing the appropriate stone on the chakra it goes with, and visualizing the energy of the stone cleansing and balancing.

No matter how you choose to cleanse and balance your chakras, it is important to remember to close them afterwards. These are main energy vortexes or centers in your body. Persons or situations having a lot of negative energy around them can cause your chakras to be clogged up with this negativity. You are also most empathic and open to psychic impressions when your chakras are fully open, and in some situations this is desirable. Most of us, though, don't choose to have our chakras fully open and vulnerable all the time. You can leave your chakras partially open for some things, and in ritual or sacred space you may want to be open fully. As you use these exercises and become more proficient at them, you will become more aware of how your psychic bodies feel when your chakras are open to different levels. Then you will be able to make a conscious choice as to how much to open or close each one, in keeping with the work you are doing.

Alternate Therapy is the alternative treatment to conventional medicine. Whereas orthodox medicine is single minded in its approach, the principles of alternative medicine are diverse. Alternative therapies treat the whole person, mind, body, and spirit. From Acupuncture to Yoga we will explore a range of methods addressing the well-being of "Self".

Acupressure:
An ancient Chinese therapy, acupressure, like its younger relative acupuncture, targets certain points of the body in order to relieve pain by releasing energy blocks. For those squeamish about the thought of those little sharp points, acupressure uses the pressure of fingers and hands instead of electricity and remains an effective preventative health care treatment for tension related ailments.

Referred to as Tui Na (China) and Amma (Japan), acupressure uses rubbing, vibration, percussion and kneading to improve circulation through stimulating stale blood and lymph from tissues. Developed over 5,000 years ago, it addresses the flow of chi or qi energy circulating along twelve major pathways called meridians, that are linked to specific parts of the body..

During the 60's scientific research revealed the existence of an independent series of duct-like tubes corresponding to the path of traditional acupuncture meridians. Since then, the meridian system theory has been further proved by the tracing of radioactive isotopes injected into the human body that, rather than following blood vessels, travel along the meridian pathway. Acupressure focuses on the relieving of pain and discomfort by responding to tensions and toxicities within the body before they develop into illness..

Acu-Yoga (incorporating yogic posture, meditations and stretches) and Do-In (focusing on vigorous techniques as well as stretching and
breathing), utilise the same points and are designed for those wishing to self-administer. .

Alexander Technique:

Focusing on the relationship between the head, neck and back, this gentle technique has been used in the alleviation of rheumatism, arthritis, debilating curvatures of the spine and various gastrointestinal and breathing disorders. There are more than 21,000 people trained throughout the world, that have been recognised with the technique at the Inner London Education Authority..

Frederick Alexander was a Shakespearean actor who couldn't understand why his voice seized up as soon as he stepped up on the stage. Concerned about this career threatening affliction, he observed himself in a mirror and discovered a repeated unconscious movement. The mere thought of using his voice caused him to pull his head back and tense his throat, both doing little for his performance. . In order to combat this, Alexander pioneered a  simple and effective way to rebalance the body through awareness, movement and touch. After intensely observing himself and others, he saw that incorrect posture in everyday activities like sitting, standing and moving could be linked to serious physical problems.

Alexander eventually recovered his voice by altering his breathing to arrest his habitual muscular responses and so pioneered a method that stops people unconsciously misusing their bodies. By interrupting familiar posture 'sets', the technique allows proper movement and functioning of the body. During a session the teacher may ask the student to let their head move forward and up and simultaneously allow their torso to lengthen and widen. Emphasis lies on "doing nothing" in order to think the teacher's instruction, and consequently prevent old habits by constructing a new body image.

The Alexander technique has been used to improve the performance of actors, dancers, musicians and athletes. Experiments conducted at Tufts University in the early 70's concluded that Alexander's methods could restore natural balance and responsiveness by interrupting the habitual incorrect practices. This technique is recommended to sufferers of chronic pain and back disorders as well as those wishing to get the most from their body.

Aromatherapy:

Aromatherapy is the soothing natural way to feel a real sense of well-being, by using essential oils. The properties of these oils and the smell on both the body and the mind are well proven to stimulate, heal, relax or soothe. Aromatherapy is a modern name for the ancient knowledge of healing and improving by using fragrant, natural ingredients, which are called essential oils and are found in herbs, flowers, fruits and the bark, root or resin of some trees.

Taking flowers to someone who is sick, is using Aromatherapy to help them feel better. A bouquet of jasmine, roses, geraniums and lavendar, all contain chemicals that relax the nervous system.. Because the molecles of essential oils are so minute and evaporate so quickly, they can penetrate the human skin to enter the blood stream and the organs, before being excreted. Scientists today who are studying botanicals are finding more and more vital ingredients in nature rather than in test tubes. Essential oils can be used in massage which combines the two senses of touch and smell and has both physical and mental benefits. In baths to relax, to soothe and to relieve muscular aches and pains. In room vaporisers it is very good for treating coughs or colds..

Ayurvedic Medicine:

Ayurveda, the science of life, has its origin in the Indian subcontinent. The main emphasis of Ayurvedic Medicine is to prevent loss of harmony in the person and to regain it if disharmony has occurred. From the dawn of history, dating back many thousands of years, Ayurveda has practised pharmacy, surgery and psychology.

Ayurvedic Medicine while emphasizing the importance of physical and mental health, deals with health in a comprehensive wholistic manner. Along with diet, exercise, rest etc, acquiring right and proper knowledge, temperance (self control) and mental concentration (meditation) are recommended. Mistakes of the mind include uncontrolled passion, expression of extremes of grief, anger, fear, pride, jealousy, stealing, feelings of attachment or solitude and an unruly tongue..
Keeping company with people of virtuous life is important for health.

Body Harmony:

A radically simple and empowering form of bodywork, Body Harmony was founded by chiropractor Don McFarland's exploration of ancient and modern healing modalities. Founded in 1985, its popularity as a healing method has been steadily growing.

A session may commence with an analysis of posture and movement, opening the client up to a greater awareness of self so that the spiritual, emotional, mental or physical goals may be achieved. The practitioner' s role in the treatment is one of support, as the client recovers balance and ease at their own pace. Assuming that thoughts produce the result, positive affirmations replace old patterns and limitations to effect a transformation of mind and body. Accepting that the only expert is the body itself, Body Harmony is a process of listening, understanding and then honouring the body's
instructions.

The Bowen Technique:

Developed in Geelong, Victoria by Tom Bowen, this technique makes use of the body's ability to heal itself through a reconfiguration of energy patterns. Engaging specific muscle groups, the technique uses mandatory time delays to ensure healing energies are directed towards the area requiring attention.

Focusing on the body as a whole, the Bowen Technique restores the structural integration between our outer framework and inner organs. Central to the approach is the recognition of interdependence between external physical problems and internal ailments. By realigning posture the skeletal frame-work is improved and the functioning of the internal organs enhanced. The Bowen Technique activates the lymphatic system, improving drainage and function to assist in combatting the swelling or congestion of tissues. Particularly effective for alleviating muscular
pain, it is ideal for sports related injuries as it dramatically reduces the healing time.

Normalising the body's energies, with no known side effects, the Bowen Technique harmonises and balances the body by regulating the activity levels of certain organs and has been proven to enhance the performance of athletes and sports professionals.

Craniosacral Therapy:

Realigning the bones and membranes of the skull, Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle and non-invasive technique which caters specifically to the Craniosacral System. This being the environment is which the brain and spinal cord develop. Forming and functioning from womb to death, the delicate Craniosacral System influences our sensory perceptions, emotions and motor functions. A Craniosacral therapist is trained to diagnose the movement of the Craniosacral system and "palpate" it, until the motion has become unified and properly aligned. Craniosacral therapy is used to remedy a range of subtle and severs conditions including headaches, ear conditions such as tinnitus, dyslexia and hyperactivity in children. It can also be used to heal imbalances in the system caused by emotional traumas through "unwinding" or "somato emotional release".

Deep Muscle Therapy:

This therapy treats the deeper layers of constricted muscles, nerves and major vessels. To achieve homeostasis - perfectly balanced body chemistry - the blood and lymph must flow uninhibited, rich in nutrients and devoid of toxins. One of the major determinants restricting the flow of blood and lymph is tight muscles. By softening hardened muscle fibres, Deep Muscle Therapy practitioners help restore the vital lymph flow between the muscles.

Feldenkrais Method:

The Feldenkrais Method involves no attempt to structurally alter the body. Aiming to increase ease of movement, it is useful to those whose freedom has been curtailed because of accidents, stress, back ailments and other physically debilitating diseases.

Hellerwork:

Developed by the original president of the Rolf Institute, Hellerwork combines deep touch, movement education and verbal dialogue in order to structurally realign the body and facilitate an awareness of the mind/body relationship. It specifically addresses the complex interweaving of the mechanical, psychological and energetic functioning of the human body. The mechanical aspect is patterned after Rolfing and aims to properly align the body with the earth's gravitional field.

Finding that the physical changes achieved by manual manipulation were not enough to bring about a permanent change, Heller developed a series of eleven sessions to provide his clients with a basis for the emotional content of the work. Accordingly, the first of these sessions sees the clients with a basis for the emotional attention called to the emotional attitudes that affect the physiological process of breathing, preparing for the release of unconscious holding patterns in the chest that are affected.

Working with movement and awareness, Hellerwork teaches clients how to sit, stand, walk, lift or run in ways more appropriate to the natural design of their bodies. The process is produced to minimise mechanical stress, creating more efficient use of the body's energy.

Hellerwork improves body alignment and flexibility, offering the increased vitality and greater emotional clarity that is essential to freedom of expression. Beneficial for anyone whose structural imbalances cause painful and stiff muscles or for conditions that may be the result of injury, emotional trauma or sustained stress.

Holistic Pulsing:

This method involves a very gentle rocking: the practitioner rocks the patient at a rate equal to the foetal heart rate of 120-160 beats per minute, creating a soothing womb-like environment for the body and mind to heal with a holistic and natural approach.

Holistic Pulsing was devloped by osteopath and naturopath, Tovi Browning, whose own experience of different therapies and training in Cranial Osteopathy led her to search for a way to integrate body and spirit in a gentle and non- confronting way. Based on the principles of life, water and movement, Holistic Pulsing allows the practitioner to see (and the client experience) where there is no movement. These blockages may be the result of old physical or emotional traumas locked in
the tissues.

Holistic Pulsing uses the power of softness, inherent to water, and an absence of force to bring to awareness, the energy and potential locked away in our bodies. The Holistic Pulsing practitoner offers total acceptance of who and how we are. With this awareness comes choice; once located, negative body patterns can be dispelled, transforming people from victim to victor.

Homoeopathy:

Homoeopathy is a medical rule whose main emphasis is on whose main emphasis in on therapeutics. It is a system using non-toxic drugs exclusively, and is used to treat both acute and chronic diseases, but it's greatest contribution is it's successful treatment of chronic illnesses that have become too difficult to manage by more orthdox methods.

Homoeopathy takes an holistic approach towards the sick individual and treats disturbances on the physical, emotional and mental levels at the same time. The aim of homoeopathy is to return the lost equilibrium of the patient on all three levels by stimulating and strengthening the defense mechanisms.

Huna:

The Hawaiian healing arts reflect beautifully the land and people from which they evolved. A practice and philosophy which integrates subtle massage with spiritual fusion, Huna employs a gentle style to delve deep within the collective memory accumulated in the nuances of the body. The dance of Hawaiian or Huna massage, has to be experienced to be believed. Sculpting skin like clay on a potter's wheel, Huna really is "loving hands loving the body". Redirecting, calming and balancing the body's subtle energy flows, the Huna practitioner is guided by an awareness of equalising meridians and spheres such as left and right, male and female, soul and
personality.

One emerges from a Huna session with a pure sense of calmed connection, a mental, physical, emotional and spiritual synthesis which lingers on.

Polarity Therapy:

Polarity Therapy is a gentle, holistic method of treatment, applicable to many health problems and also useful in maintaining health. Central to Polarity Therapy is the concept of a life energy, which is in constant pulsation from positive to negative poles via a neutral position, creating fields and energetic lines of force. This creates an energetic "template" for the physical body, termed "The Wireless Anatomy of Man" by Dr. Randolph Stone, the founder of this therapy. Although the life energy shares some properties with electricity, one should not follow the analogy too closely, as it has many properties which differ. Disease is a process which occurs when the life energy is blocked or out of balance. It could be said that there is only one disease, that of disturbance of the energetic system, with different outcomes depending on the nature of the disturbance, and where it occurs. To overcome these problems Polarity therapy uses a system of gentle bodywork supported by a specific set of exercises (Polarity Yoga), advice on diet and nutrition, and counselling( all within the overall energetic concept described in the later section - Polarity Therapy Theory). It is this energetic approach which differentiates Polarity Therapy from many other forms of bodywork. Some techniques are derived from Osteopathy and Chiropractic (Dr. Stone was originally an Osteopath and Chiropracter) , but use minimal mechanical force, relying instead on the life energy to do the work. It differs from Shiatsu and Acupuncture in the energy theory used, Polarity therapy owing more to the Indian Ayurvedic system.

Qi Gong:

There is some concsnsus in the literature that Qi Gong originated in China some 3000-4000 years ago. There are now 350 distinct forms of Qi Gong practiced in China. All forms of Qi Gong are valid, so none one should even claim the practice "the true style". Interestingly, Qi Gong has developed into seven main branches: Taoist, Confucian, Buddhist, Martial Arts, Medical, Folk Style, and the Modern synthesis. Each school of Qi Gong has its own area of special emphasis. All styles encompass inner peace and quiescence, relations, remaining flexible yet stable, free flow of Qi, natural integration of body movements, and moderate exercise performed in an orderly manner. Controlled regulation of body, mind and breathing, in Qi Gong exercises, leads to achieving the "Qi Gong" state. In this state a deeper form of relaxation is achieved, arresting mental processes but not suspending conscious awareness. The effect of this ancient practice are very broad and the resulting physical changes are relatively easy to verify scientifically, but the mental aspects are even more significant.

Reflexology:

The evolution of reflexology dates back as early as 2330BC, as paintings on the Egyptian Physician's Tomb in Saqqara portray. In Anya Gore's popular paperback, Reflexology, the author claims that it wasn't until 1913 that an American laryngologist further researched this method of healing, which was later to be called 'zone therapy'. Dr Fitzgerald divided the body into ten vertical zones, beginning in the center and extending five on each side of the body.

"He found that there was an energy link between all parts of the body falling within a particular zone". writes Gore and that by applying pressure to one area, pain could be reduced in all areas within that zone."

The pressure applied to reflexology points is widely believed to affect internal organs and glands by stimulating these reflex 'zones' in the body. Practitioners often focus on the breakup of lactic acid and calcium crystals accumulated around the 7,200 nerve endings in each foot. These then connect through the spinal
cord and brain to access all areas of the body.

With the word reflex meaning an involuntary response to stimuli, the subtle benefits of reflexology communicate directly to the body's innate desire to achieve a state of wellbeing and harmony.

Reiki:

Reiki is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, which surrounds and imbues us. Reiki successfully addresses the realms of body, mind and spirit. It may also accelerate the body's ability to heal physically, by opening the mind to the emotional and spiritual connections to disease and pain and can be incorporated effectively into various elements of professional health care.

A Reiki Therapist aims to act as a conduit (channel) for the energy to flow through, to enhance and revitalise the recipient's own power to heal him or herself. A hands on healing approach which has gained widespread recognition and support.

Rolfing:

Ida Rolf developed Rolfing - also known as Structural Integration - after many years of studying the systems of connective tissue and muscle function within the body. After some experience with Hatha Yoga, she became intrigued by the physiological/ psychological interconnection, especially when she had been successfully treated by an osteopath for a respiratory problem - the disorder having been due to a rub displacement. Rolf postulated that a person's self-image has much to do with body posture - for example, someone with low self-esteem often has stooped shoulders.

Deep tissue massage is used in Rolfing, paying particulat attention to the head, shoulders, thorax, pelvis and legs, with aim of correcting vertical alignment. Rolfing is now a gentle body therapy as extremely firm pressure is applied to release the blockages in the body causing the ailment.

Shiatsu:

Shiatsu is an Oriental healing system from Japan that aims to stimulate the circulation of energy, (Ki), through the body by the stimulation of acupressure points and meridians. Stimulating points along the meridians, (or channels of energy), acts to move the energy and rebalance the person helping to restore health.

Although Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning "finger pressure", the practice of Shiatsu is also done with the knees, elbows, toes, heel of the hand and the foot. Treatments are given with the patient wearing light comfortable clothing and lying on a futon mat. As one of the Oriental healing arts, Shiatsu shares the philosophy that disease is an imbalance of yin and yang energy within the body and the meridians, and that rebalancing the energy within the body is the way to maintain or regain health.

In Oriental medicine all symptoms of illness have either a yin or yang quality with the focus being on the cycle of change from yin to yang. Yin energy is quiet, deep, passive and nourishing and when out of balance might show up as tiredness, poor muscle tone, frequent urination, pale color, little appetite and a depressed or defeated emotional condition. Yang energy is active, purposeful. aggressive and functionally protective of the body. Signs of excessive tension in the neck and shoulder area, redness in the face, irritation, anger, over-eating or drinking would indicate the need for a yin treatment to rebalance the energy.

As with all forms of Oriental medicine, Shiatsu treats according to the symptoms the person exhibits, without necessarily giving the symptoms a name. It is very useful for those long term chronic conditions which have no diagnosed name. There is a strong reliance on common sense, observation and the sensitivity of the
practitioner. The role of touch also plays a major role in the healing potential of Shiatsu. As the energy blockages are cleared, harmony is restored and the body is able to heal itself. Shiatsu is appropriate for all ages and while beneficial for the physical body, also has positive effects on the mind and spirit.

Therapeutic Massage:

According to John Yates, PhD and author of "A Physician's Guide to Therapeutic Massage", massage can benefit conditions such as muscle spasm and pain, spinal curvatures, headaches, and tension- related respiratory disorders such as bronchial asthma and emphysema. As stated in the "Definitive Guide": "Studies show that massage can be used as an adjunct in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders and neurological and gynacological problems, and can often be used in place of pharmacological drugs".

The support for therapeutic massage has developed in conjunction with the growing amount of scientific studies. Aside from the more immediate, calming effects, massage has on an overworked and overstressed body, therapeutic massage influences deep within the internal organisation of the body. Regular therapeutic massage will help to reduce the incidence of muscle fatigue and chronic stress by releasing body tensions.

Trager Mentastics: Movement as a Way of Agelessness

Mentastics is an approach designed to restore and maintain this agelessness of body and mind. The term is a coined expression meaning "mental gymnastics" - very gentle gymnastics that are mentally directed to free the body from tensions. One of the most pleasing and natural aspects of Mentastics is the way the body's own weights are used to open and move each part. For example, the arm can hang and swing freely, joining - not resisting - the effects of gravity. Movements done in this manner can bring us into a deeply relaxed and peaceful state that Dr Trager calls "hook-up".

Hook-up is the same as meditation. Dr Trager describes its process as blending and becoming one with the energy force that surrounds all living things. Science has been able to observe and even measure this energy. We can see and study it through the use of scientific instruments, such as Kirlian photography. When in hook-up, the individual can enjoy a renewed and enhanced sense of well-being.

Yoga:

Yoga means "union", the union of body, mind, and spirit. It is one of the oldest health systems in the workd today and was referred to in "The Unpanishads" , the Hindu scriptures written around 1,000BC. Since the 1950's, when BKS Iyengar helped popularize yoga in the West, yoga has become better known and is now practiced throughout the world.

Yoga is based on the understanding that the state of mind affects the health of the body and conversely if the body is in poor health then mental functioning will suffer. There are different yoga systems each with a particular emphasis on the mind, body or spirit. Hatha and Raja yoga focus on the body and mind, Karma yoga involves conscious action, and Bhakta is the yoga of devotion.

In classical yoga physical, mental and spiritual health can be maintained by attention to the eight "limbs" of yoga. These "limbs" combine lifestyle, hygiene and detoxification processes with physical and psychological practices. The first four limbs cover purification and detoxification of the body, physical postures (asanas) and breathing practices. The other four limbs involve stages of meditation. This integrated approach to personal development helps to prepare one for spiritual growth.

The health effects of yoga are of increasing interest to practitioners in the developing field of mind/body medicine. According to "Alternative Therapies"-The Definitive Guide, the benefits of yoga and meditation for a wide range of conditions have been demonstrated in over a thousand well-designed studies. Problems to be helped include stress and anxiety, high blood pressure, poor memory, pain and various addictions. Studies have also shown that yoga has a beneficial effect on the respiratory, glandular, nervous and metabolic systems and increases the flexibility of the body. Yoga is suitable for all ages and most benefit is gained by regular practice. Yoga techniques can be easily incorporated into daily working life to improve overall quality of life.
Candles are simple to make, require few special tools or materials, and are powerful focal points for visualization and personal power.

* Step #1: Decide what kind of candle you'll be making.
* Step #2: Purchase either paraffin or candle wax from a crafts store.
* Step #3: Assemble all your materials before you start melting the wax, i.e:wax, containers, wicking, wax coloring, herbs, oils, wooden spoon, saucepot(to be used only for melting wax!), coffee can or a can large enough to fit in saucepot and leave space enough for water, molds,etc.,. ..
* Step #4: Fill the pot halfway with water and bring to a boil. Break the wax into smaller pieces and when water boils place can in water and wax inside can. Turn heat down to medium. Watch closely to make sure wax doesn't get too hot. Turn heat down if necessary. Once wax melts turn heat down to low.
* Step #5: Depending on what type of candle you are going to make; Add color to wax, add oils or herbs and blend well.(If you used herbs you should decide if you're going to strain the wax or leave the herbs to burn(Warning- burning herbs don't smell the way you think they should!).
* Step #6: Prime your wicking by saturating it with melted wax and letting the wax harden before using. Cut wick to the size you want plus 1-2 inches.
* Step #7: If you are using a container to pour the wax into be sure the mold is warm before you pour. If you are going to make taper candles pour wax into a dipping can (one that's as long as you want your candles to be). Begin dipping. Hold a length of wicking between your thumb and forefinger. Dunk it into the wax. After dipping, hold it in the air for a moment or two until the wax has set. Dip again, and again until the candle has reached the width you want. When done, hang the candle in a spot where it won't be touched for several minutes. A cabinet is a good spot, stick the top of the wick under the bottom of the cabinet door allowing the candle to hang freely. Test the candle after 20 minutes or so. The wax should have set but still be warm. Lay a piece of waxed paper on the counter and roll the candle back and forth GENTLY!. This straightens the taper and reduces irregularities on its surface. When the candle is fairly straight, cut off the inverted cone at the bottom of the candle with a sharp knife. Dip the taper two more times and hang to dry until hard.
* Step #8: If you poured the wax into a container; attach a base to the wick, wait until the wax has formed a thin skin on the top then drop wick down the center and hold in place until skin forms around it enough to hold it itself.(I've been know to use a couple chop-sticks to keep the wick from moving, that way you can get on with things). After about 20 minutes or so, you'll notice a dent in the top of the wax. If the top is firm to the touch pour wax into the depression to make a flat surface. Let wax set completely(8- 24 hours) and trim the wick to 1/3 inch.

Notes**

1. When melting wax, it is important to bring it to the appropriate temperature; for basic gulf-wax paraffin like you get at the hardware store that's about 130-150. but if you make it too cool, tapers come out lumpy and cast candles are very difficult to remove from the mold because they don't contract enough. if it's too hot, tapers take forever to build up, and cast candles shrink too much and exhibit white marks on the outside and sometimes tiny crackle effects and/or cracking. so, right wax, right temperature. you know it's too cool if it isn't perfectly clear and it's too hot when you start seeing heat swirls in it - like it's behaving like cooking oil when that starts to get HOT. but a candy thermometer for 5 bucks is probably the best insurance you can get for producing consistent candles.

2. For a container candle the container works better if its warm. but if you will be unmolding the candle, it better to get the wax temp right and have the mold cold. it gives a smoother finish and helps the wax set up quicker. it also causes the outside layer of wax to shrink quickly even before the mold is completely filled, so it makes to easier to remove.

3. When you make a molded candle, tie a tight knot in the wick. Thread the wick UP through from the bottom to the inside and pull it up taut so the knot is pressed against the bottom of the mold. Put the wick-rod across the top of the mold and tie a half-hitch keeping the wick taut. now, on the bottom of the mold if its metal, find a small screw and tighten it into the hole around the wick (professional molds actually comer with a wick screw and it's easier to just wrap the wick around it instead of knotting it). Then no matter what type of mold, put some sticky putty (candle putty {this is also known as mold-sealing clay} is best, but others work, {it should be available in the candle making section of your favorite hobby store or online source} or even krazy glue if this is a disposable mold like a milk carton, anything to make it water tight. Test the seal with water, and be sure to dry the mold completely afterwards. If the mold is metal, put it into a bath of water to get a really smooth finish (this also helps keep the bottom from leaking 'cos it sets the wax real quick)

4. This is REALLY important. The wick type and size MUST be matched to the diameter of the candle and the type of wax. and braided wicks should always be used in pillar candles. An under sized wick will give a really weird burn... it'll drift through the center of the candle and never give a complete burn but it's more annoying than dangerous, and the candle may become self-extinguishing. but if done properly and undersized wick can create a wax shell that can be refilled with tea-lights or votives. This is what i do on my carved unity candles so they can be everlasting. but an over-rated wick IS dangerous. It burns too hot and causes the shell of the candle to fail too soon, thus the melted fuel is not contained within the shell until it is consumed and it will spill out. Also the wick will not properly bend over on itself and consume itself, so it will need to be frequently trimmed or it will become a real smoker. If you've ever used a Yankee candle. You've seen this, but as best I can tell, that's done on purpose. The wick is properly sized to the container, to give a complete burn, but the wax is very soft because of the amount of scent oil so, in effect the wick is slightly over-rated. It seems people would rather have it smoke a bit and trim the wick than have a bunch of really expensive wax that didn't melt. Metal core wick should be used in votives, tea-lights and other container candles so that when there is a lot of liquid fuel, the wick doesn't tip over or collapse. Also, if you use a metal core wick with a wick holder at the bottom when pouring cast candles the way you described, it's much easier because it'll pretty much stand on its own with just a bit of support and it won't float out of center the way a wax primed wick will. since you have to get wicking somewhere and most places that have normal braided wick also have metal core and wick holders.

THE ASPECTS OF HUMANITY

gone is our history, burned to ashes
our poetry forgotten, as the time passes:
return deep memory, root of our dissension,
nurture the tree of present invention
gone are our dignities, gone are our powers:
once in freedom we blossomed as wild flowers:
life moved among us like a loving mother:
sharing her wisdom we care for one another,
without our mother, how shall we start living?
without our mother, how shall we seek beauty?
without our mother, how shall we die peacefully?
without our mother, how can we be reborn?

beth-birch
welcome, welcome, welcome, all ye here:
welcome, welcome, welcome in the year,
dark is the night and chill the winter wind,
crisp is the snow on the barren furrow,:
bring in the yule log, make the fire bright,
we shall wish for a warm tomorrow.
over the fire the branches dangle,
of the holly bright that is king tonight,
red is the berry, green is the prickle
the sacred mistletoe glowing white
now we shall feast and pass the wassail cup,
sing the ballad with joy and mirth
soon we shall sleep, and dream the night away,
gathering strength, for the springs rebirth, on the earth, in the air
through the fire, by the water
I am strength

all on a plain there stands a lake,
a magick mirror doth it make:
and gathered on a wintry night,
ye may behold a wondrous sight.
for in that lake reflected are
the lady moon and the morning star:
across the sky they journey on,
and to her son she sings this song:
cradled in my loving arm,
your dream unmarred by fear of harm,
swift be your ride on the heavenly boat,
as on the milky way we float.
where turns the crown of the northern wind
a silver island shall you find
and on that isle a castle white,
wherein is peace and calm delight.
inside that castles silver wall.
there stands a dark majestic hall,
and in that hall a lady fair,
the end of all desire is there,
so slumber deep thou heavenly twin
and so thy journey, soon begin:
for they who in lobes flames shall die
shall rise again i promise thee
on the earth, on the air
through the fire, by the water

hooves churning in the brine,

we gather line on line.
wave on wave, wave on wave
wave on wave of the sea mares rave,
at the spring tide swell with pride,
embrace the tide and with the sea mares ride.
mighty now we too must bow
to times mightier hand:
comes the ebb tide
we subside,
and graze the golden sand...
wave on wave, wave on wave
wave on wave of the sea mares graze
one and all head Rhiannon's call

the legend of the roll right stones
once there stood in this sacred place
an alder grove,
beside the stone circle.
the alder buds spiraled on the twig in a dance of life:
the flowers bursting green sang of the mysteries of the Waters,
the red bark sang of the flames of fire
the brown twigs echoed the colors of the earth.
the thirteen aspects of humanity stood
and giving praise to the old ones sent forth their gifts to humanity....

the circle now lies silent,
each dewdrop a tear of the sun,
sorrowing until the prophecy shall unfold....
that when all thirteen are together again
and the labrys is laid on the altar and her blood is shed,
then shall the king stone move and the dance shall begin again

For people who are sick, or know someone who is, I thought maybe I'd share this little bit of information that I was given.  Albeit, I cannot say that I have tried it as of yet, but I have a friend, who knows another who claims the power of healing properties are amazing.  It was originally titled as a herbal remedy in treating cancer, but again, and I emphasize,  I do not recommend this in lieu of a doctor's care or treatments.  I offer this only because I figure anything is worth a try if a person is ill.   I have done some research on the ingredients and have found them to be a very healthy idea to take (in smaller doses) for those of us who want to remain healthy.  Feel free to do your own research on these products.

The following dosages were the ones recommended for the treatment of cancer. Again, if you are healthy,  I strongly urge you to take as directed by the makers of each product for continued health and well being.

System's Strength

Energy Green

Both of these products are made by Crystal Star.   It is advised to make a cup of each and drink together 3 times a day.

Green Magma

It is said, for cancer treatments, to take 10 pills a day.  I'd strongly advise you to take much smaller doses and use as recommended if healthy.

Essiac Tea

It is important to drink frequently,  however it is a cleansing agent.  There is controversy over this product, so again,  I caution you to do your own research before trying.

Beltane -- Holiday Details and History

Beltane is the last of the three spring fertility festivals, the others being Imbolc and Ostara. Beltane is the second principal Celtic festival (the other being Samhain). Celebrated approximately halfway between Vernal (spring) equinox and the midsummer (Summer Solstice). Beltane traditionally marked the arrival if summer in ancient times.

At Beltane the Pleiades star cluster rises just before sunrise on the morning horizon, whereas winter (Samhain) begins when the Pleiades rises at sunset. The Pleiades is a cluster of seven closely placed stars, the seven sisters, in the constellation of Taurus, near his shoulder. When looking for the Pleiades with the naked eye, remember it looks like a tiny dipper-shaped pattern of six moderately bright stars (the seventh can be seen on very dark nights) in the constellation of Taurus. It stands very low in the east-northeast sky for just a few minutes before sunrise.

Beltane, and its counterpart Samhain, divide the year into its two primary seasons, winter (Dark Part) and summer (Light Part). As Samhain is about honoring Death, Beltane, its counter part, is about honoring Life. It is the time when the sun is fully released from his bondage of winter and able to rule over summer and life once again.

Beltane, like Samhain, is a time of "no time" when the veils between the two worlds are at their thinnest. No time is when the two worlds intermingle and unite and the magic abounds! It is the time when the Faeries return from their winter respite, carefree and full of faery mischief and faery delight. On the night befo re Beltane, in times past, folks would place rowan branches at their windows and doors for protection, many otherworldly occurrences could transpire during this time of "no time". Traditionally on the Isle of Man, the youngest member of the family gathers primroses on the eve before Beltane and throws the flowers at the door of the home for protection. In Ireland it is believed that food left over from May Eve must not be eaten, but rather buried or left as an offering to the faery instead. Much like the tradition of leaving of whatever is not harvested from the fields on Samhain, food on the time of no time is treated with great care.

When the veils are so thin it is an extremely magical time, it is said that the Queen of the Faeries rides out on her white horse. Roving about on Beltane eve She will try to entice people away to the Faeryland. Legend has it that if you sit beneath a tree on Beltane night, you may see the Faery Queen or hear the sound of Her horse's bells as She rides through the night. Legend says if you hide your face, She will pass you by but if you look at Her, She may choose you. There is a Scottish ballad of this called Thomas the Rhymer, in which Thomas chooses to go the Faeryland with the Queen and has not been seen since.

Beltane has been an auspicious time throughout Celtic lore, it is said that the Tuatha de Danaan landed in north-west Connacht on Beltane. The Tuatha de Danaan, it is said, came from the North through the air in a mist to Ireland. After the invasion by the Milesians, the Tuatha faded into the Otherworld, the Sidhe, Tir na nOg.

The beginning of summer heralds an important time, for the winter is a difficult journey and weariness and disheartenment set in, personally one is tired down to the soul. In times past the food stocks were low; variety was a distant memory. The drab non-color of winter's end perfectly represents the dullness and fatigue that permeates on so many levels to this day. We need Beltane, as the earth needs the sun, for our very Spi rit cries out for the renewal of summer jubilation.

Beltane marks that the winter's journey has passed and summer has begun, it is a festival of rapturous gaiety as it joyfully heralds the arrival of summer in her full garb. Beltane, however, is still a precarious time, the crops are still very young and tender, susceptible to frost and blight. As was the way of ancient thought, the Wheel would not turn without human intervention. People did everything in their power to encourage the growth of the Sun and His light, for the Earth will not produce without the warm love of the strong Sun. Fires, celebration and rituals were an important part of the Beltane festivities, as to insure that the warmth of the Sun's light would promote the fecundity of the earth.

Beltane marks the passage into the growing season, the immediate rousing of the earth from her gently awakening slumber, a time when the pleasures of the earth and self are fully awakened. It signals a time when the bounty of the earth will once again be had. May is a time when flowers bloom, trees are green and life has again returned from the barren landscape of winter, to the hope of bountiful harvests, not too far away, and the lighthearted bliss that only summer can bring.

Beltane translated means "fire of Bel" or "bright fire" - the "bale-fire". (English - bale; Anglo-Saxon bael; Lithuanian baltas (white)) Bel (Bel, Bile, Beli, Belinus, Belenos) is the known as the bright and shinning one, a Celtic Sun God. Beli is the father, protector, and the husband of the Mother Goddess.

Beltane is the time of the yearly battle between Gwyn ap Nudd and Gwythur ap Greidawl for Creudylad in Welsh mythology. Gwyn ap Nudd the Wild Huntsman of Wales, he is a God of death and the Annwn. Creudylad is the daughter of Lludd (Nudd) of the Silver Hand (son of Beli). She is the most beautiful maiden of the Island of Mighty. A myth of the battle of winter and summer for the magnificent blossoming earth.

In the myth of Rhiannion and Pwyll, it is the evening of Beltane, that Rhiannon gives birth to their son. The midwives all fell asleep at the same time, as they were watching over Rhiannon and her new baby, during which he was taken. In order to protect themselves, they smeared blood (from a pup) all over Rhiannon, to which they claim she had eaten her son. The midwives were believed, and Rhiannon was forced to pay penance for seven years. She had to carrying people on her back from the outside of the gate to the palace, although rarely would any allow her to do so. The baby's whereabouts were a mystery. Oddly, every Beltane night, one of Pwyll's vassals, Teirnyon Twryv Vliant, had a mare that gave birth but the colt disappeared. One Beltane night Teirnyon Twryv Vliant awaited in the barn for the mare to foaled, when she did, he heard a tremendous noise and a clawed arm came through the window and grabbed the colt. Teirnyon cut off the arm with his sword, and then heard a wailing. He opened the door and found a baby, he brought it to his wife and they adopted Gwri Wallt Euryn (Gwri of the Golden Hair). As he grew he looked like Pwyll and they remembered they found him on the night Rhiannon's baby became lost. Teirnyon brought Gwri of the Golden Hair to the castle, told the story, and he was adopted back to his parents, Rhiannon and Pwyll, and and named by the head druid, Pryderi (trouble) from the first word his mother had said when he was restored to her. "Trouble is, indeed, at an end for me, if this be true".

This myth illustrates the precariousness of the Beltane season, at the threshold of Summer, the earth awakening, winter can still reach its long arm in and snatch the Sun away (Gwri of the Golden hair). "Ne'er cast a clout 'til May be out" (clout: Old English for cloth/clothing). If indeed the return of summer is true than the trouble (winter) is certainly over, however one must be vigilant.

On Beltane eve the Celts would build two large fires, Bel Fires, lit from the nine sacred woods. The Bel Fire is an invocation to Bel (Sun God ) to bring His blessings and protection to the tribe. The herds were ritually driven between two needfires (fein cigin), built on a knoll. The herds were driven through to purify, bring luck and protect them as well as to insure their fertility before they were taken to summer grazing lands. An old Gaelic adage: "Eadar da theine Bhealltuinn" - "Between two Beltane fires".

The Bel fire is a sacred fire with healing and purifying powers. The fires further celebrate the return of life, fruitfulness to the earth and the burning away of winter. The ashes of the Beltane fires were smudged on faces and scattered in the fields. Household fires would be extinguished and re-lit with fresh fire from the Bel Fires.

Celebration includes frolicking throughout the countryside, maypole dancing, leaping over fires to ensure fertility, circling the fire three times (sun-wise) for good luck in the coming year, athletic tournaments feasting, music, drinking, children collecting the May: gathering flowers. children gathering flowers, hobby horses, May birching and folks go a maying". Flowers, flower wreaths and garlands are typical decorations for this holiday, as well as ribbons and streamers. Flowers are a crucial symbol of Beltane, they signal the victory of Summer over Winter and the blossoming of sensuality in all of nature and the bounty it will bring.

May birching or May boughing, began on Beltane Eve, it is said that young men fastened garland and boughs on the windows and doors of the young maidens upon which their sweet interest laid. Mountain ash leaves and Hawthorne branches meant indicated love whereas thorn meant disdain. This perhaps, is the forerunner of old May Day custom of hanging bouquets hooked on one's doorknob?

Young men and women wandered into the woods before daybreak of May Day morning with garlands of flowers and/or branches of trees. They would arrive; most rumpled from joyous encounters, in many areas with the maypole for the Beltane celebrations. Pre-Christian society's thoug hts on human sexuality and fertility were not bound up in guilt and sin, but rather joyous in the less restraint expression of human passions. Life was not an exercise but rather a joyful dance, rich in all beauty it can afford.

In ancient Ireland there was a Sacred Tree named Bile, which was the center of the clan, or Tuatha. As the Irish Tree of Life, the Bile Pole, represents the connection between the people and the three worlds of Bith: The Skyworld (heavens), The Middleworld (our world), and The Otherworld. Although no longer the center life, the Bile pole has survived as the Beltane Maypole.

The Maypole is an important element to Beltane festivities, it is a tall pole decorated with long brightly colored ribbons, leaves, flowers and wreaths. Young maidens and lads each hold the end of a ribbon, and dance revolving around the base of the pole, interweaving the ribbons. The circle of dancers should begin, as far out from the pole as the length of ribbon allows, so the ribbons are taut. There should be an even number of boys & girls. Boys should be facing clockwise and girls counterclockwise. They each move in the direction that they are facing, weaving with the next, around to braid the ribbons over-and-under around the pole. Those passing on the inside will have to duck, those passing on the outside raise their ribbons to slide over. As the dances revolve around the pole the ribbons will weave creating a pattern, it is said that the pattern will indicate the abundance of harvest year.

In some areas there are permanent Maypoles, perhaps a recollection of ancient clan Bile Pole memory. In other areas a new Maypole is brought down on Beltane Eve out from the wood. Even the classical wood can vary according to the area tradition is pulled from, most frequently it seems to be birch as "the wood", but others are mentioned in various historical documents.

Today in some towns and villages a mummer called Jack in the Green (drawing from the Green man), wears a costume made of green l eaves as he dances around the May pole. Mumming is a dramatic performance of exaggerated characters and at Beltane the characters include Jack in the Green and the Fool. The Fool, and the Fool's journey, symbolism can be understood in relation to Beltane as it is the beginning of beginnings, the emergence from the void of nothingness (winter), as one can also see the role of the green man as the re-greening of the world.

Traditionally in many areas Morris dancers can be found dancing around the Maypole. Morris dancing can be found in church records in Thame England going back to 1555. Morris dancing is thought to have originated many centuries ago as part of ancient religious ceremonies, however it seems that Morris dancing became associated with Mayday during the Tudor times, and its originating history is not all that easily traced, as is the way with many traditions.

The Maypole dance as an important aspect of encouraging the return of fertility to the earth. The pole itself is not only phallic in symbolism but also is the connector of the three worlds. Dancing the Maypole during Beltane is magical experience as it is a conduit of energy, connecting all three worlds at a time when these gateways are more easily penetrable. As people gaily dance around and around the pole holding the brightly colored ribbons, the energy it raises is sent down into the earth's womb, bringing about Her full awakening and fruitfulness.

In Padstow, Cornwall, Beltane morning a procession is led by the "obby oss" a costumed horse figure, in a large circular banded frock and mask. The procession is full of song, drums and accordions. Professor Ronald Hutton of Bristol University points out that the first account of the Padstow May Day 'Obby 'Oss revelries was written in 1803. He offers evidence however that, like English Morris Dancing, its origins lie in English medieval times. This does not discount the possibility that its roots lay in the foundation of the fertility rites of Beltane, a more politically correc t transmutation of fertility acts.

There is also a Queen of May. She is said in many areas to have worn a gold crown with a single, gold leaf at its front, in other areas her crown was made of fresh flowers. She was typically chosen at the start of the Beltane festival, which in time past was after sundown on the eve before Beltane day. Many accounts mention both a May Queen and King being chosen, whom would reign from sundown the eve before the Beltane day to sunset on Beltane. Among their duties would be to announce the Beltane games and award the prizes to the victors. The rudimentary base of this practice can be drawn back to the roots of Beltane festivities, the union of the Goddess and Her Consort, the joining of earth and sun, the endowment of summer. The Goddess has many guises: Danu - The Great Mother, Blodeuwedd (the Flower Bride), Isolt (Iseult, Isolde) and many, many others. The consort can also take many forms including the Green Man, Cernunnos or Tristan.

As Beltane marks this handfasting (wedding) of the Goddess and God, it too marks the reawakening of the earth's fertility in its fullest. This is the union between the Great Mother and her Young Consort, this coupling brings new life on earth. It is on a Spiritual level, the unifying of the Divine Masculine and the Divine Feminine to bring forth the third, consciousness. On the physical, it is the union of the Earth and Sun to bring about the fruitfulness of the growing season.

It is customary that trial unions, for a year and a day, occur at this time. More or less these were statements of intent between couples, which were not legally binding. The trial marriages (engagements) typically occurred between a couple before deciding to take a further step into a legally binding union. It seems ancient wisdom understood that one does not really know another until they have lived with them, and when you live together things change and we change, as well. With this understanding unions were entered upon, first as a test period, and then if desired, a further commitment could be taken. It through always knowing that it is only through the choice of both to remain, that the relationship exists favorably.

May, however, according to old folklore is not a favorable time for marriages in the legal and permanent sense. There is reference after reference in the old books of this belief, and according to my Irish grandmother, May is not the month to marry, woe is to had by those who do. I can understand the premise of this folklore, May is the Goddess and God's handfasting month, all honor would be Hers and His.

Water is another important association of Beltane, water is refreshing and rejuvenating, it is also imperative to life. It is said that if you bathe in the dew gathered before dawn on Beltane morn, your beauty will flourish throughout the year. Those who are sprinkled with May dew are insured of health and happiness. There are other folk customs such as drinking from the well before sunrise on Beltane Morn to insure good health and fortune.

The central color of Beltane is green. Green is the color of growth, abundance, plentiful harvest, abundant crops, fertility, and luck. White is another color that is customary, white brings the energies of cleansing, peace, spirituality, and the power to dispel negativity. Another color is red who brings along the qualities of energy, strength, sex, vibrancy, quickening, health, consummation and retention. Sun energy, life force and happiness are brought to Beltane by the color yellow. Blues and purples (Sagittarius energies: expansion, Good Fortune, magic, spiritual power, Success), and pinks (Venus energies). Beltane is rich in vibrant color, lighting the eyes and cheering the Spirit as we leave the dreariness of winter behind.

It is customary to bake a colorful fruit and spiced filled bread for festivals in the Celtic lands, traditionally this festival bread is sweet dough made with sweetmeat and spices. In Scotland they are the bannock - Bonnach Bealtain - for Beltane, in Wales - Bara Brith, Ireland it is Barm Brack and in Brittany Morlaix Brioche. For Beltane this bread was made the eve before Beltane day, is it said that the bread should not allow it to come into contact with steel during preparation (steel is harmful, deadly to the faery folk).

Bannocks are actually uncut scones originally cooked on a griddle. Wheat does not grow well in the Highlands, originally bannocks were made with oat or barley flour made into dough with little water and no leavening. Traditionally, a portion of the cake was burned or marked with ashes. The recipient of the burnt cake jumped over a small fire three times to purify and cleanse him or herself of any ill fortune. Offerings of bannocks and drink are traditionally left on doorsteps and roadways for the Faeries as an offering, in hope of faery blessings.

May is the month of sensuality and sexuality revitalized, the reawakening of the earth and Her Children. It is the time when we reawaken to the vivid colors, vibrant scents, tingling summer breezes, and the rapture of summer after a long dormant winter. It is a time of extraordinary expression of earth, animal, and person a time of great enchantment and celebration.

The excitement and beauty of Beltane can not be better expressed than through the gaiety and joy of our children. There is not doubt "spring fever" hits at Beltane, and hits hard. Children are full of unbridled energy charged up and ready to go! Children always amplify the seasonal energies and the thrill of their change, they bring richness and merriment wherever they go.

It is the child's unrestrained expression of bliss and delight that is what Beltane is all about. It is the sheer joy of running through fields, picking flowers, rapturing in the sunlight, delighting in the fragrance of spring, dancing in the fresh dew covered grass. Our children guide us through the natural abandonment of our adult sensibilities and show us how to take grand pleasure, warmth and bliss from the gift of Beltane.

12 Ancient Oils of the Scriptures

Aloes/Sandalwood — Santalum album) It is believed that aloes of the Bible may have been fragrant sandalwood, a spice accessible to the residents of ancient Palestine."And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and Aloes, about an hundred pound weight." (John 19:39)

Cassia — (Cinnamomum cassia) Cassia was a key ingredient in the temple incense."All thy garments smell of myrrh, and ales, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad." (Psalms 45:8)

Cedarwood — (Cedrus atlantica) From the mighty "Cedars of Lebanon" came the fragrant and long-lasting wood used to build Solomon’s temple. "And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of thewall." (1 Kings 4:33)

Cypress — (Cupressus sempervirens) This oil is extracted from the cypress tree, which has wood so durable that the cypress doors of St. Peter’s in Rome show no sign of decay even after 1,200 years. "He herewith him down cedars, and taketh the cypress and the oak, which he strengtheneth for himself among the trees of the forest." (Isaiah 44:14)

Frankincense — (Olibanum — Boswellia carteri) The Hebrew word for frankincense, Levonah (sometimes translated as "incense"), is in the Bible 22 times. "Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?" (Song of Solomon 3:6)

Galbanum — (Ferula gummosa) This oil has a pungent, balsamic odor. "And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum;these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each there shall be a like weight."(Exodus 30:34)

Hyssop — (Hyssopus officinalis) In 1975 one writer suggested 18 different plants for the biblical hyssop. While the exact variety may not be known, an anticeptic or cleansing property is suggested because it was employed in many purification rites. "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.(Psalms 51:7)

Myrrh — (Commiphora myrrha) Myrrh was used in burial and was highly regarded by David and Solomon. It was one of the ingredients of the holy anointing oil. I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, and aloes, and cinnamon." (Proverbs 7:17)

Myrtle — (myrtus communis) Myrtle branches are still used by Jews for the Feast of Tabernacles. "Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths,as it is written." (Nehemiah 8:15)

Onycha — (Styrax benzoin) Onycha (‘Oh-nigh-kah’ ) was an ingredient in the holy anointing oil: "And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight." (Exodus 30:34)

Rose of Sharon/Cistus — Labdanum — Cistus ladanifer) This beautiful rose has a soft honey-like scent and may be the small shrubby tree called the rose of Sharon. "I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valley." (Song of Solomon 2:1)

Spikenard — (Nardostachys jatamansi) A very expensive oil, spikenard was sealed in alabaster boxes. "And [Jesus] being in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard, very precious, and she brake the box, and poured it on his head." (Mark 14:3)

Beltane, May 1

Beltane, also called May Day by many Christians. This Sabbat celebrates the fertility and union of the Horned God and the Goddess. At this time, life is renewing itself. Birds and animals are mating. In the fields, newly planted seeds are beginning to grow. Great fires are lit honoring the fertility God Belenos. Some leap the fires to show the exuberance of the season.

A Maypole is erected and bright ribbons are hung on it. The Maypole, a phallic symbol, represents the masculine. The soft colored ribbons are the feminine. The union of the two symbolizes the union of the God and Goddess.

This is the time to fertilize your dreams with action. It is legend that children conceived at Beltane were gifted by the Gods. These children became known as Merry-Be-Gots.

Cancer
June 22 - July 22

Cancer, the fourth Sign of the Zodiac, is all about home. Those born under this Sign are 'roots' kinds of people and take great pleasure in the comforts of home and family. Cancers are maternal, domestic and love to nurture others. More than likely, their family will be large, too -- the more, the merrier! Cancers will certainly be merry if their home life is serene and harmonious. Traditions are upheld with great zest in a Cancer's household, since these folks prize family history and love communal activities. They also tend to be patriotic, waving the flag whenever possible. A Cancer's good memory is the basis for stories told around the dinner table, and don't be surprised if these folks get emotional about things. Those born under this Sign wear their heart on their sleeve, which is just fine by them.

The mascot of Cancerians is the Crab, and much like this shelled little critter, Cancerians are quick to retreat into their shells if it suits their mood. No wonder these folks are called crabby! For Cancer, it's not that big of a deal, though, since they consider this 'shell' a second home (and they do love home). The flip side of this hiding is that shell-bound Crabs are often quite moody. Further, in keeping with their difficulty in sharing their innermost feelings, it can become a Herculean task to pry a Crab out of its secret hiding place. What to do? Give the Crab time -- eventually these folks will come out to play again. When they do, they'll be the first to say so, in keeping with the Cardinal Quality attached to this Sign. It's said that Crabs are first to laugh and first to cry, so you can bet they'll fill you in. That shell, by the way, isn't the only tough thing about Crabs. These folks are tenacious and strong-willed and like to get their way. If their well-documented kindness and gentleness doesn't do the trick, however, they're not above using emotional manipulation to make things happen. If that still doesn't work, they'll just go back to their shell and sulk, or find a way to get back at the source of their pain, since Crabs can be rather vindictive. That said, any self-respecting Crab would tell you that they are ultimately motivated by protecting their home and loved ones, a most noble goal.

Cancer

This Water Sign finds its happiness in the home and it prefers its humble abode to any luxury restaurant or posh club. To satisfy your birthday Crab's need for homey comfort, celebrate with family and friends. Share a big, hearty meal and regale everyone with stories and memories. Keep the pace easy and let the nostalgia flow!

Perfect Gift: Keep in mind that Cancers can be sensitive to the elements and to the general chaos of life; something like a soothing eye mask or a trip to a day spa would really touch your Cancer friend's heart.

What does a Cancer wish for as the candles are blown out? Health and contentment for the whole family.

Capricorn
December 22 - January 19

Capricorn, the tenth Sign of the Zodiac, is all about hard work. Those born under this Sign are more than happy to put in a full day at the office, realizing that it will likely take a lot of those days to get to the top. That's no problem, since Capricorns are both ambitious and determined: they will get there. Life is one big project for these folks, and they adapt to this by adopting a businesslike approach to most everything they do. Capricorns are practical as well, taking things one step at a time and being as realistic and pragmatic as possible. The Capricorn-born are extremely dedicated to their goals, almost to the point of stubbornness. Boy, those victories sure smell sweet, though, and that thought alone will keep Capricorns going.

The Goat symbolizes Capricorns, and an apt mascot it is. Goats love to climb to the top of the mountain, where the air is clear and fresh. In much the same way, Capricorns want to get to the top of their chosen field so that they can reap the benefits of success; namely fame, prestige and money. Getting to the top isn't always a walk in the park, however, so it's likely that Goats will ruffle a few feathers along the way. These folks can indeed be domineering, even egotistical, on their route to the top. They'll tell you it's part of being a leader with bright new ideas (in keeping with the Cardinal Quality assigned to this Sign).

Capricorns are industrious, efficient, organized and won't make a lot of waves. They are scrupulous with details and adopt a rather conventional posture in business and in life. These folks feel best playing it safe, since this is a fail-safe way to get to the top -- eventually.

Thankfully, Capricorns are patient, too, and are happy to wait for their ship to come in. The flip side to this staid behavior is that Goats can become quite unforgiving of those who aren't as diligent or ambitious as they are. Capricorns need to remember that they do need allies along the way, ambitious or otherwise. In any case, once Capricorns receive the recognition and social status they so fervently crave, it's likely that all will be forgiven.

Capricorn

The Sea Goat always dislikes a fuss but turns beet red when it finds itself the object of one. To avoid uncomfortable blushing and shy shrugs, take a birthday Capricorn out to a nicely appointed -- but not extravagant -- restaurant and coax it into indulging just a bit. This conservative Earth Sign worries about reputation and status and would much prefer to celebrate with a few close, sincere friends than to be subjected to a big, silly party.

Perfect Gift: Known to be a bit conservative and reserved, you can thaw the cold Capricorn heart with an antique watch or a special family heirloom.

What does a Capricorn wish for as the candles are blown out? A promotion at work.

Gemini
May 21 - June 21

Gemini is the third Sign of the Zodiac, and those born under this Sign will be quick to tell you all about it. That's because they love to talk! It's not just idle chatter with these folks, either. The driving force behind a Gemini's conversation is their mind. The Gemini-born are intellectually inclined, forever probing people and places in search of information. The more information a Gemini collects, the better. Sharing that information later on with those they love is also a lot of fun, for Geminis are supremely interested in developing their relationships. Dalliances with these folks are always enjoyable, since Geminis are bright, quick-witted and the proverbial life of the party. Even though their intellectual minds can rationalize forever and a day, Geminis also have a surplus of imagination waiting to be tapped. Can a Gemini be boring? Never!

Since Geminis are a mix of the yin and the yang, they are represented perfectly by the Twins. The Gemini-born can easily see both sides of an issue, a wonderfully practical quality. Less practical is the fact that you're not sure which Twin will show up half the time. Geminis may not know who's showing up either, which can prompt others to consider them fickle and restless.

They can be wishy-washy, too, changing their mood on a simple whim. It's this characteristic which readily suggests the Mutable Quality assigned to this Sign. Mutable folks are flexible and go with the flow. Further, the Twins are adaptable and dexterous and can tackle many things at once. It's a good thing, too, when you consider their myriad interests. The downside of such a curious mind, however, can be a lack of follow-through. How much can any one person do, anyway?

Gemini

This witty and flirtatious Air Sign requires constant interaction, mental stimulation and lots of room to flit about. Ever the talker, Gemini would be bored silly by a quiet birthday get-together. Invite lots of friends, keep the music lively -- and don't slow down the merriment until the birthday Gemini wears down first! Intellectually challenging trivia and word games go over well with Gemini, spotlighting that sharp mind.

Perfect Gift: Geminis are avid readers, so almost any book will keep them busy -- but don't make it too long or turgid a read, since this Sign loses interest quickly.

What does a Gemini wish for as the candles are blown out? To write a bestseller.

Leo

Leo
July 23 - August 22

Leo is the fifth Sign of the Zodiac. These folks are impossible to miss, since they love being center stage. Making an impression is Job One for Leos, and when you consider their personal magnetism, you see the job is quite easy. Leos are an ambitious lot, and their strength of purpose allows them to accomplish a great deal. The fact that these folks are also creative makes their endeavors fun for them and everyone else. It's quite common to see a Leo on stage or in Hollywood, since these folks never shy away from the limelight. They are also supremely talented and have a flair for the dramatic. Warmth and enthusiasm seems to seep from every Leo pore, making these folks a pleasure to be around. They do love pleasure!

It's the Lion which symbolizes Leos, and the king (or queen) of the jungle is a most appropriate mascot, since these folks consider themselves the rulers of their universe (and the Zodiac at that). Like Lions, Leos tend to be dignified and strong, and it is this sense of their power which allows them to get things done. A Leo on your team is a good thing, since Lions are eager to see their projects through to completion. Putting these folks at the helm is a good thing, too, since the Leo-born are natural leaders. They may ruffle a few feathers along the way, however, since they can also be overbearing and somewhat autocratic. This may be in keeping with the Fixed Quality assigned to this Sign -- Lions are indeed opinionated and set in their ways. That said, they are well organized, idealistic and have a knack for inspiring others.

Leo

Seeking the ultimate birthday gift for a Leo? If you can wrap up fame or tie a bow around the spotlight, you're set! Since fame's not really for sale, this Fire Sign will accept a big, boisterous surprise party at which they get to be the absolute center of attention. Leo may be grand, but this Sign is actually easy to please -- as long as it's the object of everyone's affection!

Perfect Gift: Leo can be vain, so a gift that reflects that dramatic personality and stunning physical beauty goes over best: Try jewelry, clothes or tickets to the theatre.

What does a Leo wish for as the candles are blown out? An Academy Award.
