I got a caller from B.C who read my bio about being prior U.S military. She said "Canadian's don't care about their military". WRONG. I remember one cold day standing on a bridge with hundreds of Canadians. Firemen, Police Officers, Newfies, Nova Scotians, Chinese, Indians, etc greeting this family bringing their son home who fell in battle. Every bridge from the Niagara Region to Toronto looked like this.
I will never forget that one cold day... on the highway of heroes.

       HONOR OUR FALLEN HEROES !!!

Somewhere an unvisited grave stands with an American Flag planted by the V.F.W of an old man who stormed the beaches of Normandy. Somewhere a tombstone in Arlington stands flower dressed and wreath bearing as a reminder of the man who died in Pearl Harbor. Somewhere a woman reads old letters from her loved one who didn't make it home from Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Gulf War or even Bosnia. In Washington D.C a man places his hand upon the Vietnam memorial where his best friend and brother's name reflects back the memories that bring words that were never said and should have been... Somewhere a family weeps over the uniformed photo of their son or daughter that fell to a roadside bomb or got ambushed while their convoy made it's way through Afghanistan or Iraq... and they unfold the very flag that dressed their coffin for it's yearly flying at half mass in the front yard. Somewhere someone remembers their grandfather, father, friend or brother who was one of the four marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima or died on that hill trying.... or fell at the hands of the Viet-Kong on the Ho Chi Min Trail..... Somewhere the remains of a soldier missing in action lie in the jungles of Cambodia, or beneath the desert sands.... never to return home.... War sucks. People die... but in the end... these people made the ultimate sacrifice for each and every one of us. Whether you agree to their cause or not ... in the end.. these people died because they felt they were protecting YOU. Let's not forget what this weekend is really about...

Well before I get into the hate part, I gotta fill you in. My paranormal Research Team and I are holding a charity event for the Make-A-Wish of Toronto & Central Ontario (Canada).  As you know, they are dedicated to bringing happiness to children with life threatening illnesses through wish granting. Well, our event is going to be held in Hamilton at a local popular haunted building ... which other groups are holding events there too next month and one is the day after ours. Just an FYI ... that was the only place that could give us a decent price (as I had to go out of pocket) for the rental and stuff... and this is the HATE I'm getting from people:

> Dear "Spookies" director.
>    Hi. My name is Elizabeth Boorden. I have been involved in the paranormal field for about 10 years in the Greater Toronto Area. I recently found out that you are holding a halloween event a the custom house on Oct 30th. Please take this as "constructive criticism" because I only want what is best for your group and other groups that have been established well before the spookies established themselves.
>    First of all, the location in which you picked is rather out of your region, don't you think? Mississauga, Brampton and even the outer GTA has many facilities in which you could have chosen for your event. They are more competitive in size and capacity in which you are insinuating your event to be. There is no way you are going to fit a band into the customs house. Also, the ghosts there do not exist any longer. My friends and associates of other more prominent groups in that region have already let them free and they clear that building every time there is an event there. Looking for any spirits or ghosts in the custom house is only a waste of time, really.    Secondly, there is going to be way too much competition for your event. The price range of which you are charging is much more than the admission to the other events in the area. Again .. held by more prominent groups of both paranormal and non paranormal related. I am talking about groups with much more noriaty than yours. I am sure the spookies are good people, but honestly, who ARE you? Do you realistically think you will obtain the audience you are anticipating when Haunted Hamilton has their event just 24 hours after yours? I personally feel that this is unethical on your part to hold your event, at your specified date and time when another group that is your elder is holding theirs the next day. If you can move your event, you should as soon as possible.   Think about it. I also feel you are wasting any money you are investing in this and wasting the time of the Rescue Mediums and Terry Boyle because I just do not think your little event is
>  going to have much of an audience being that there are other groups holding their festivities the same weekend. I feel I would be doing my duty to contact each party attending and ask them to reconsider showing to your event, but I could be wrong about all of this and I do wish your team the very best.
>   This e mail was not intended to hurt your feelings, but as someone who is your senior when it comes to paranormal, I feel that you should take my advice. I am also willing to mentor you and your group so that your region can have a outstanding team in your area and one day be able to be on the same scale as the other known groups.
>
> Sincerely
> Elizabeth Boorden.

> P.S I do like your website! Good work, but please get it updated as soon as possible!

What the hell is WRONG WITH PEOPLE?!   This is an event for sick and dying CHILDREN ... some of which reside in the very city the event is being held at....
Please help me out by sending some good energy my way. I'm getting bogged down by peoples negativity with this. This isn't' the only e mail of this nature I received, but it's the most recent.

I'm asking all of you to please send out some energy for us so that we can rise above all this negativity and have a successful event. The Make-A-Wish really needs this!
Well here it is ... my yearly psychic power surge. I don't know why this happens, but it's already started kicking my butt.  First of all, I've been waking up in the morning hearing a voice in my ear as  if someone is standing over me.  It's different all the time. Sometimes the voices sound very metallic and sometimes I hear glass breaking. Odd eh?

Also, this is going on right in the middle of me planning a Halloween event in October at a haunted building. This ought to be interesting. Speaking of which, Please send out some energy so that we get sponsors and even some vendors wanting to sell their wares. It would greatly help out with the expenses.

So like ... my mother didn't even call today. Same thing every year. Every November 11th ... too. I don't expect people to remember my birthday ... but dammit .... us vets only ask for two days a year ... three when we're dead. Is that too much?

While you're eating your tater salad, watch'n fire works ... remember the guy who gets a little too loud when he drinks beer down at the VFW,  the man who stormed the beaches of Normandy who lies in a hospital bed forgotten at the VA hospital. The soldier in Iraq trying to get the base operator to give him a line home .... or even the lady with her folded flag and her son's medals who didn't make it home from Saigon.

Independence Day is the day we got our freedom from the British after a long bloody battle ... but it didn't stop there. Those who took that oath and Solemly swore to protect the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic are the very heart and soul of what our great nation is. .... please remember us.

Well, the title of this blog pretty much says it all. I'm not very happy with a small percentage of the paranormal research community. As you read this and if you say to yourself 'I'm not like that.' or 'I'm not doing that' then, this blog does NOT apply to you. If it DOES, then I hope that I hope what I am about to say makes you reflect on a few things.

Well for starters, it seems that some people out there have lost focus as to what this field is about. I have talked to a few people out there that are so driven by the almighty dollar, that they forget that it's not only the living we are working with, it's those who have passed on. They are all about turning a buck to the point where they won't help a poor soul cross over because 'No ghost ... no money'. Tell me, is this fair? Ask yourself... would you want to die and be stuck here and some paranormal specialist refuses help you meet your loved ones on the other side because they want to keep you for a part of their  events  like some carnival sideshow freak of nature?

Another thing that's really gotten under my skin is SOME of those people who have gotten their names known, who have gotten a bit of fame ... (This doesn't apply to EVERYONE of course. Just maybe one or two people.)  have taken on the 'holier than thou' attitude. They treat people who have been in this field just as long them or  if not longer than them like someone who watched a few episodes of 'Paranormal State' and decided they wanted to form a research team. Get over yourselves... really. WE have gotten to a point where OUR work is accepted by society. Treat everyone like you want to be treated, not like how you may have been treated by someone when you first started out. Just because someone does have a new team formed up it doesn't mean their amateurs. Maybe they moved to a new area and since they are going to stay there, they wanted to establish themselves. Maybe they were in the military and couldn't establish a group because they were moving so much. Maybe they were a truck driver on the road, or had kids they didn't want exposed to it until they were old enough. Maybe they hate the media. Maybe their culture thinks that things like helping spirits cross over, exorcism, even divination are a part of every day life or so sacred that it should not be exploited or displayed for a viewing audience. Public recognition does NOT make you an expert and honestly .. if you want to challenge this statement. Feel free to come on up to the G.T.A.and explain yourself to members and clergy of religious groups from allover the world in which some deal with this sort of thing every day.

Another thing, just because you don't know who someone is, it doesn't mean they don't know what their doing. Things like demonology, exorcisms, psychic abilities, contacting the dead aren't new here, people. These are things that date back to the beginning of mankind. As a matter of fact, I would like to point out something in the old Scandinavian lore about the god Odin. Some stories depict Odin as contacting or summoning the dead to get them to tell him things of past present and future. The Celts used to drink ale out of the skulls of the enemies they beheaded every Samhain eve to honor their fallen enemy. Some scholars have believed that they did this so that they would not be haunted. The Vikings as well as some Native American and Inuit people believed that there are ancestral spirits that hang out here to guide their famlies or come back to do so. Research days like Samhain, Walpurgis, Dia de los muertos (Day of the Dead -Mexico), Thanh Minh (Day of the Dead Vietnam) ... this goes back a long way, guys. All this stems back for centuries. Even if you're a veteran investigator that's done this for twenty years, or someone who picked up their first book today.... who are we to call ourselves experts and call others amateurs when there's so many generations of world culture dealing with spirits that predates our work today?

When you're dead and gone .... who's going to carry the torch? This is a time,  when paranormal research is in its prime, to start mentoring. Stop focusing on yourself so much and start listening to people and start guiding others. Not any one of us can claim to be an expert in this field until our time to die comes. THEN we will know what REALLY goes on, but until then those veterans out in the field need to be reaching out to the new people, not insulting them. There are a lot of energetic, dedicated and ambitious people in the field that want you to shape and mold them  and are looking at you with enthusiasm in their eyes eyes saying 'WORK WITH ME!   TEACH ME!' When you sit down to write your next book,  hold your next speaking engagement, keep that in mind. People come see you to learn from you. Maybe you can walk away with something new you learned from them. Going on camera and saying things like 'People don't know what their getting into really blah blah blah' is not helping. THEY KNOW they don't know what they're getting into. That's why its so fascinating. Most of people I have interviewed, have said that they have had an experience that affected them and they wanted to know more. Very few of them have gotten into this work because of something they saw on T.V. To be honest ... IF you really think that people are being 'stupid' and running to do this kind of work and not knowing what their getting into because of all the shows out now ..... well my daddy had an old saying. If you don't want the genie to pop out ... don't rub the damn lamp. In this sense.. if you don't want people getting into this line of research ... stop making the damn shows. Stop writing the damn books because IF you are so against people exploring this ... don't add fuel to the fire in which you are blaming T.V for. As a matter of fact why don't YOU quit because obviously you are contributing to the problem. I know I heard at least ONE 'Amen' out there.

Lastly, I think I need to point out that there is a certain responsibility that we need to take here. There has been a certain trend the past couple of years I have been up here with some groups holding 'ouija board' night. A number of tables are set up with a  number of ouija boards at each table. Anyone who wants to go to the event pays a fee and they basically go play with the ouija board. Now... whether you believe the ouija board is innocent or not, is irrelevant. Are we not trying to get people to take us seriously? A lot of people have worked so hard to get paranormal research accepted and this is what we have to show? Ouija board night? On another extreme scale, do you not think that ... inviting anyone ...any random person who pays the fee  to play with a device that makes contact to spirit.. ANY spirit that comes through ...  a tad dangerous? I by no means am an expert of demonology, but don't you think this may be a tad irresponsible? Would you let some random kid in the neighborhood play with your fire arms? Think about it. ... the only 'good' I can think of that can come out of this, is that you'll at least be keeping known exorcists busy and Hollywood movie writers gainfully employed .

That's all I have. I'll get off my ... well I'd say soapbox but for those of you who know me, I think saying 'I'll get off my tampon box now' is more appropriate.
Until next time ... Happy Haunting and I'll see you in the field.

-Carrie

I know this is a controversial issue but I think we can come to an agreement as to what I am about to show you. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3107661

Upon viewing an e mail a friend sent me, and checking out to see if it was for real .. and to my horror it is, I have discovered that Hasbro toy company has released a brand new version of the ouija board. It's pretty "barbie pink" and comes in a special little slumber party bag along with a deck of future telling cards.

Now, I'm not going to piss and moan about the cards because my granny handed me a deck of tarot cards at the age of five and said "read me", so I'm not up in arms about that. Really when you read the cards, tea leaves etc you're reading a person, not trying to make contact with the dead. Especially through means of which anything can be let in, not just the alleged "ghost of grandma" However, I've been around long enough to know that girls (especially teens), their hormones, and opening gateways to the paranormal is NOT A GOOD COMBINATION. That's like ... that's like the time my friend Mark decided to mix milk and Jack Daniels. It curdled in the glass and he still drank the stuff and like the ouija board ... the end result wasn't pretty.

I know some of you think "oh it's just a harmless game",  well do your research. Nothing good comes out of little girls (or any child)  making contact with unknown entities. I'm not talking about the poor lost souls who need to cross over either. RARELY you get that through an ouija board.... What you do get is energies on a lower vibration that can be downright malevolant. I know children can be born with medium and other psychic abilities and I am by no means putting that in the same bucket.

Look at the recommended age. Ages 8-12. If you think it's OK for your kid to play with this, then why not just invite the local sex offender to your house to babysit because that's the equivalent and in some cases less dangerous than the things the ouija board has invited into peoples homes and lives.

Oh the comments on this product make me FUME

"
This ouija board is amazing! I used it at a sleepover and I had so much fun with my friends. i think im obsessed. LOL the ouija board has a spell over me!!! it was the first time i'd used a ouija board so yeah it was awesome!!
rock on ouija board!"

"One how cold you se it because it doesn't glow in the dark ! Two it did not conetct with the demonds and sperits for my family ! Online it looks varry good but don't be fold because when you open it it rely is't anything !!!"

And it doesn't stop there, my friends. I think we as responsible paranormal investigators, some parents out there, and psychics should take action and build a strong case to present to both Toys R Us and Hasbro to educate them about the dangers of the ouija board and provide some solid case history and try to persuade them to pull this Pink Little Gateway to the Demonic off the shelves or work our butts off to educate more people about the dangers of the ouija.

I have a friend whom I consider a lil soul mate of mine. Why? Well there have been times I've dreamed about him and woke up to find an e mail in my in box almost word for word what he said and did in my dream. My friend lives all the way in India and is a very devout Hindu. I will admit the friendship has been healing for me on many levels and has brought me much happiness...until now.

Well it's May. May is a very sad time for me. My father passed away In May of 05, I've lost some good friends in Iraq this time of year too a few years ago, and it's like .. it's like having this ugly Christmas tree that unpacks itself every year and sets itself in my way. Granted I've been working so hard to break away from this, but still... that sadness creeps upon me. After sending an Easter basket (even though neither of us celebrate the holiday) and some treats, I opened up to my friend about this sadness which I have been struggling with.

His response on April 30th:

I know very well, that how tough it is to be without our loved ones....whom we love so much and now they are no way around us. I havw also been to that phase, as I also lost my mom when i was only 12. I lost my grand pa, in 1997, a year later my mom passed away. ...It is tough and the world looks so raw....but my friend this is life, we have come alone in this world and we will be going alone....thats the harsh reality of life....but till the time we are hear we need to be a part of world and do our best, so that our loved ones who are in heaven can feel proud of us, because if we will be happy and successful, they will be very happy, but if we will be sad they will also cry...and I know we never want our loved ones to cry...so hope u will understand, i know thats tough...but live goes on and it nevers stop for anyone....

Good luck!

Anand

So basically .. "People die ... life's hard ... good luck". That's how I took it.
I wrote back "ouch" and Well ... I know he's in the middle of a move to another city and starting an internship ... but that's the last I heard from him. I cannot help but feel the feeling of abandonment and loss on top of the feeling of loss I already have inside of me from missing my loved ones.. now I feel like I lost a really good friend. So is it just me, mercury retrograde or is it just a cultural thing going on here? I don't know but it hurts like Hell. So ... to all of you feeling that sense of loss and heartache ... don't feel you are alone. We keen readers have our own stuff we go through and we are humans too.

Kissing Secrets by Sign

Know your date's astrological sign? Find out how to make them swoon with just the right kiss.

By Barrie Dolnick

The first kiss… The first time you ask, "Wanna come back to my place?" These are moments so fraught with what-ifs and am-I-doing-it-rights that pretty much every single person out there could use some success strategies. Well, why not get some astrological guidance on how to pull it off? Each horoscope sign responds best to a certain sort of woo; here’s which tactics are tops based on the person you’re dating.

Aries man:
Likes to be in control. Show you’re game, but don’t jump his bones. You can lead an Aries to romance but you can’t make him kiss.

Aries woman:
Likes a strong demonstration of your interest, no pussy-footing around. Go for sparks — candles, a roaring fire, and clear clues that you’re ready to pounce. She’ll respond with an enthusiastic yes.

Taurus man:
Loves subtlety, hates the direct approach. He’ll respond to a gentle touch of your hand or the gift of a soft, pink cashmere sweater — then wrap your arms around him as if to say, "I’m a gift, too."

Taurus woman:
Finds fine dining, a sexy car or, of course, a good piece of jewelry a big turn-on. Say it with taste and a spare-no-expense attitude and she will find your advances are worthy of her.

Gemini man:
Lights up with great conversation and tunes out to endless, self-absorbed anecdotes. Set the tone for romance by asking him questions, really listening to him, and leaning in to show how his mouth can communicate without words.

Gemini woman:
Loves to be amused and numbs out when things are dull. Keep her interested and romanced by planning a fun date with at least three parts — drinks, dinner, and a walk. Keep her moving and talking, and soon she’ll be smooching.

Cancer man:
Needs his own timing. Put the Crab in a pinch, and romance will crack. Let him signal that he’s at ease and ready. Find a balance between best friend and sex goddess, and you’ll hit his comfort zone.

Cancer woman:
Needs to trust you first. You won’t earn that by flirting with her friends or telling stories about fun you had without her. Sidle up to her slowly, keep her warm, put your arm around her, and her shell will slowly soften.

Leo man:
Is by definition romantic and fun. He is confident of his charms, so make him work for you. Set a scene for all-out romance and play hard to get. Give him the thrill of the chase as well as the rewards of romance.

Leo woman:
Knows she’s a catch and enjoys the game. Anyone too sensitive, too slow or too dull will not win. Throw some curve balls, entertain her, and go for the trophy when you see she’s laughing with you, not at you.

Virgo man:
Gets in his own way. He’ll be the first to help you, teach you and guide you in romance, but he may forget to participate in it for himself. Ask him about good wine, good food and find a nice night to share it. He’ll get the message—or you can explain it to him after you’ve led him back to your place (think: bedroom).

Virgo woman:
Loves to give — but she’s going to be wooed and wowed by being the receiver. Show her that you know her favorite movies, food and flowers and she’ll give you a lot of kisses to show you her thanks.

Libra man:
Is all about peace, love and understanding. He’ll respond to even-tempered sweetness way better than a ha-cha-cha over-the-top lip lock. Be a girl, let him be a guy, and he’ll find it easy to share a great kiss.

Libra woman:
Needs to know her guy is there for her. Focus on her, notice her outfit, and listen to what she says. She’s smart, but she wants you to love her for more than her mind. Embrace traditional romance, and you’ll be embraced right back.

Scorpio man:
Intense, passionate and totally suspicious. Give him your rapt attention and absolutely no reason to stress about your loyalty. Beckon him gently into your arms, and he’ll take it from there.

Scorpio woman:
A Bond girl in real life. You can praise her beauty, worship her shape, and still fear her just a little bit. That combination of attention will intoxicate her. She’ll give you what she can—at the very least, a kiss you’ll never forget.

Sagittarian man:
Can get claustrophobic with any kind of formulaic romance. Give him something unexpected — maybe a ride on a rollercoaster — and don’t look him straight in the eye until you’re ready. Keeping him guessing will keep him wanting more.

Sagittarian woman:
Is riveted by wisdom and adventure. But wander carefully down this road. Phony smarts are a huge turn-off. Be the wittiest version of yourself, channel a little Indiana Jones, and put her in a situation where she has to hang on tight.

Capricorn man:
Is quiet, capable and tricky. He needs to take the lead in a very 1950’s sort of way. Think old movies, low tones, and no pressure. Wear a fetching, non-staining lipstick and gaze up at him with slightly anxious wide eyes. He’ll slip into a Cary Grant role soon enough.

Capricorn woman:
Won’t give herself away. You have to take it slowly and purposefully. Demonstrate that you’re not just going through the motions or pulling some tried-and-true romantic routine. If she sees your focus is all on her, she’ll cooperate.

Aquarian man:
Hard to read. He’s quirky, a little preoccupied and will not take hints very well. You might have to do the whole dressed-to-kill/"let’s head back to my place" routine to get his attention. Then press your lips on his. He’ll pick up on that.

Aquarian woman:
Very intuitive, but hard to romance. She’s smart and deeply focused on whatever is buzzing through her brain. To get her on track, brush her hair away from her face. With the simple motion and light touch, she’ll feel your interest and focus on your gaze. You can take it from there.

Pisces man:
A softy with a gruff exterior. He’s a man’s man except when he’s with you. Give him the subtle go-ahead to curl up with you by being relaxed, feminine, and captivated. He’ll purr like a pussycat if you don’t approach him too roughly.

Pisces woman:
Embodies the definition of romance. Woo away as long as you’re serious. She likes the whole shebang — flowers, candles, wine, music — as long as you can follow through for a long while. She hopes to mate for life.

It was the day before my 16th birthday. I was doing my usual  summer vacation monday ritual of cleaning the chicken coops and baby duck broods at my grandmothers small farm at the crack of dawn, and my aunt grandmother and cousin were in the kitchen playing with their tarot cards over coffee. I had been using their cards off and on since the age of five.

When I got done feeding the fuzzy little "peepers" I walked back down to my house and took my shower. I had only a little bit of time before we piled in the car and made our way to Lily Dale.

We arrived at around noon in time to grab lunch and catch the first service at the Stump and I was a little disappointed when I got called on for a message and my aunt and cousin disputed with me the rest of the afternoon it was intended for my cousin "because I was wearing a shirt I borrowed from her". We were driving around with my grandmother in the front seat. She was blind as a bat but seemed to see spirits clearly when they came to her, and to this day I still claim she was a medium.

Being from a long line of market merchents, and my female pack of relatives no different from that, there is an old saying. "The Eagle Sh*ts tomorrow/today/next week etc..." It means the government checks from the V.A, Social Security, Disability etc etc are issued out on the first of every month and it will be a very busy farmers market week.

My grandmother was counting the clump of dollar bills she had in her purse and it was funny because being blind she had to hold each bill right up to her eyeball to make out the currency amount on each bill. Counting out thirty dollars took about thirty minutes LOL. Finally she muttered the same words she mutters at the end of EVERY  month. "The Eagle sh*ts tomorrow." This day I replied "so does the birthday fairy". My grandma stopped her money count and looked over shoulder (even though she couldn't see me) and said ... "That's Right! How old now? 15?"  I corrected her about my turning 16 and then she made some funny joke about the "fortune teller" maybe seeing some nice Italian boy in my future.

My grandma had a funny way of wording things. She was a black haired, blue eyed Italian woman from Naples Italy. Her mother made a living reading tea leaves and tarot cards and selling prayer books and rosaries outside of a small church in Naples where it is said the Virgin Mary has appeared. She did this for years and years until her and her husband saved up enough money to immigrate to the United States.  It didn't matter if you read tarot or were a full blown medium or someone who just used cards.  In my grandmother's vocabulary ... we readers are  "All fortune tellers and it's the gypsies one had to worry about". Keep in mind she had no regard to the actual blood line of people, a "gypsy" in her strange wording was a "fake fortune teller trying to take your money.". .. and I know some of you are raising eyebrows and finding this to be a tad racist .... but I  never claimed my grandmother WASN'T racist. You don't want to know about some of the things that came out of her mouth about people :(... however those were HER views not mine, and I just wanted to make that clear.

Anyways, after notifying her of my 16th birthday's eve she said "Birdie... I have to go to the ladies room." and then my aunt stopped the car's slow creep through the roads of Lily Dale to let me and her out while her and my cousin went and parked the car to wait. I took my granny by the arm and she said "We're near that crystal place right?" I told her yes we were and the bathrooms were right next to it. She ordered for me to take her there. I asked her about going to the ladies room and her response comically enough was "Let em wait. They'd be right up our a**es anyways telling me what to buy what not to buy ... screw em."  So we made our way to The Crystal Cove instead of the ladies room.

The little bell jingled on the door as we walked in.  It was busy. My grandmother asked a woman where the tarot cards are and she took us to the back and showed us the big table where all the tarot and divination decks were displayed. My grandmother picked up boxes one by one holding them up to her face like her money counting method and finally it was the Mary Hanson Roberts Deck and Book Set that passed inspection. She asked me what I thought about that one and I said it looked nice. At the time the deck came in a bright indigo blue box with illistrations of the cards on the front sides and back and blue was my grandmas favorite color. So .. it was  a win. She made me take her to the counter and she purchased me my first deck of tarot cards ever.

We went back to the car where my cousin and aunt were waiting. They weren't too surprised to see granny and me coming back with a shopping bag but a little curious as to why the secrecy.... and she told them exactly what she told me in the store. Granny wasn't one who really held anything back.... a trait in which I have inherited - surprise surprise. My aunt said nothing    but in her purse she pulled out a brand new Animal Medicine Cards set she bought while we were having lunch .... pulling the same "Ladies room trick".

So that was my rite of passage. A family tradition passed down from generation to generation stemming back to Naples Italy. I was the last person she ever bought cards for on the 16th birthday. My other number of cousins never received such a gift nor did my sister and I always wondered why. My aunt gifted my cousin... naturally because it was her daughter. However I was the last.

I still have my Hanson Roberts deck and sometimes callers are fortunate enough for me to have selected that one out of my 100 decks of tarot to read for them. It was the Medicine Cards that opened up my intuition full blown ... but I'll save that for another blog :)

My name is Carrie L. Pierce and I am a paranormal investigator. I lead a semi well known paranormal research team known as The Meadowvale Spookies Paranormal Research Team located in Mississauga, ON Canada. A paranormal investigator is a person who researches various types of psychic, supernatural and other various unexplainable phenomenons which includes what people may refer to as ghosts. One would often think that a ghost is someone who passes away and their spirit still resides here in this world. Although it is a possibility to encounter such a case, it is not the only type of haunting that exists. I have a breakdown of different classifications of hauntings. Each classification has different operating procedures in which we must follow and be prepared for.
The first classification (also known as a “Class 1”) of a haunting is known as a “residual haunting”. This is a haunting in which the ghost like characters of a specific time and occasion play out the event repeatedly like a movie. The people playing the moment are not aware of present day living people. They do not communicate except that moment in which they are “reliving”. A theory we paranormal researchers have is that, that particular moment in time was so emotionally intense, that it left its impression in the location. Examples of this would be Civil War battles that replay on the battlefield, a murder, and they say that Marilyn Monroe’s “ghost” at one of the hotels in Niagara Falls is her residue lingering in the place. These kinds of “ghosts” can sometimes be “cleared out” by what is called “smudging” or clearing of energy. Some remain on going like broken record.
The second type of haunting in which I would like to discuss is what we call a poltergeist; also known as a “Class2”. A poltergeist according to Webster’s Dictionary translates to “noisy ghost” or a ghost or spirit supposed to manifest its presence by noises, knockings, etc. Studies performed by top researchers over the years such as Ed and Lorraine Warren, have concluded that poltergeists aren’t actually “intelligent” hauntings. They do not have any personality or have ever existed on this plane as a being. They are energy manifested from mostly pubescent teens and women dealing with menopause. Poltergeists tend to go away on their own once the hormones and emotional state becomes rebalanced in the individual. This is also what is referred to as uncontrollable psycho kinesis or the ability to move objects with the mind. The individual projecting the energy is usually unaware that they are the cause of the activity. Poltergeists signature activities that separate them from other ghosts, is the constant water spots, water pipe bursting and wet spots left on walls, floors and ceilings. The best way to describe a poltergeist is like a whirlwind of energy. It doesn’t’ communicate or manifest into a recognizable form like a person. A poltergeist can be cleared out much like a residual haunting, however, it also have to entail things like hormone therapy or waiting it out. Poltergeists usually go away on their own eventually when the person “balances” out internally.
The third tier of hauntings are broken down into Class 3A and 3B. I have included the sub classification on the third class because all three are intelligent hauntings. Class 3A is what is known by the Tibetan monks as a Tulpa. I also refer to this as a “Class 3A Haunting”. The Tulpa is an entity which is very much like the poltergeist, except it has “intelligence” or a life of its own. It communicates with the present day living people except it can change according to the belief energy put into it. A good example of what a Tulpa could be is the childhood imaginary friend. The child puts so much energy into believing that they have this “Friend” that the energy takes on the form of the friend. The popular cartoon “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” is a whimsical example of what the tulpa is. The most common manifestation of the Tulpa is the “ghosts” that “reside” in popular haunt spots such as a place known as “The Screaming Tunnel”.
The Screaming Tunnel in Thorold, ON Canada is listed on a popular website called “The Shadowlands” and also premiered on a television show called “Creepy Canada” back in 2003. The story of the ghost that resides there has become so popular, amateur ghost hunters and thrill seekers venture out to the tunnel in hopes of catching evidence of the entity. There is not a Friday or Saturday night in the summer where you do not catch someone exploring the tunnel looking for the ghost. The hopes, excitement, fear and adrenaline rush of hundreds of would be paranormal investigators and ghost seekers actually may have manifested itself into the entity that “haunts” the tunnel. It does not mean the entity is not real, it means that the entity is “man made” so to speak. Sometimes the ghost of the “Screaming Tunnel” is a little girl who has caught on fire, a teenager who was raped, or even a man who caught on fire.
All these forms have been seen in the tunnel. This is why the ghost of the tunnel is labeled as a tulpa. With that being the case, tulpas cannot “cross over” because they are not a mortal soul. They are usually banished or destroyed when the creator doesn’t believe in them anymore.
A “Class 3B” haunting is the most commonly known haunting. I also call this type of haunting a “Mom and Pop” kind of haunting. These are souls that still remain here, but pose as no real threat or mean harm. They may startle us, wake us up at night with their footsteps, or even play the occasional prank on us but these are people who remain here. Many cultures around the world believe that sometimes people do not “cross over” for various reasons. Some spirits remain here because they want to watch over the loved ones they left behind. Others do not want to let go of houses they’ve built or possessions they left behind. Some do not realize they are dead and think we are the ghosts, while others feel they have unfinished business. The ghost that haunts the Angel Inn at Fort Erie, ON is an example of such a being. The ghost there is not friendly to Americans and often steals possessions like shoes, American Flags or tourist merchandise. It is also said that the ghost will dump ice in the bed while an American is sleeping if the tourist makes fun of Canadians or doubts the existence of the ghost. Personally, I have not encountered the ghost while visiting the Angel Inn, but being married to a Canadian may have won me some favor with the famous spirit.
The “Class 4” is a very tricky category. These are entities or energies that are attached to a certain object. I use the terms “entities” and energies” because in many cases it may not be a mortal soul hanging on to the item. There have been demonic attachments to various objects as displayed in John Zaffis’s museum in Connecticut for haunted or “possessed items”. Sometimes the object may attract certain entities if it was used for magical working either positive or negative. For example a sword used in Satanic rituals may attract dark and negative spirits. Sometimes a person could feel nauseas just standing next to the item. A staff that was used by an Inuit shaman for healing will attract positive entities and spirits and may give a person standing next to it a feeling of calmness and tranquility.
A haunted object can also be anything that may have had sentimental meaning to someone such as a grandmother’s wedding ring, or a dead child’s favorite teddy bear that they clung to until the day they passed away. The object does not have a spirit trapped inside of it, but the spirit that owned it in their life here will move the object or even haunt the place it is located in. The only way to remove the spirit is to remove the object. In more malevolent cases, the item is destroyed and buried. The number one most common item we come across in our cases that is “haunted” is none other than the Ouija board. The Ouija board dates back to the 1800’s as a tool to talk to the dead. It’s a board with letters and numbers etched upon it. Later on, Milton Bradley published the board as a game. The board comes with what is called a “planchette” and the people using the board place their fingers upon it while asking for a spirit to move the planchette. It seems like fun and games, but when someone participates in such activities chances are they are opening a door for any entity to enter their home and possibly attach itself to them. It uses the board to make the connection with the person.
The “Class 5” type of ghost is what we call a “raging soul”. A spirit like this is very dangerous and will try to inflict harm upon people. Many times even the bad ones wish to remain here and no one knows why. Some people think the old phrase “Hell on Earth” is literal where as people who may have been killers, rapists, molesters and even criminally insane stay here to keep inflicting harm upon people. Sometimes they will try to kill living people and animals that are in the location. Many of these types of ghosts can be found in prisons and psyche wards and are said to be boarder line demonic. The only difference between these spirits and those of what is labeled as demonic is that they are mortal souls and could possibly “cross over” or even banished but not without a struggle and a lot of effort.
The “Class 6” is divided into two different categories. If we work a “Class 6” case, it means we are working with what many cultures around the world would call “demonic”. Demonic entities are not just a Judeo Christian concept. They are entities that have been here since the world’s creation. In Christian lore, they were banished from Heaven with Lucifer. In pre Christian and Native American lore they come from other worlds that are parallel to ours.
There is no “crossing over” for these kinds of entities because they have always been here. They are not someone who passed away and their spirit lingers here. These are beings in which predate human existence. Whether someone feels they are from the gates of Hell or spawned from the negative energy of this world, the fact remains that there have been countless cases documented and tales told about them. There are two types of demonic entities. The first type is what we call “6A”. This type is more animalistic in nature. Most of the communication investigators will receive from it is growls, hisses, physical attacks in which most times leave claw marks upon the flesh. They have also been known to kill pets as well. We typically turn to help from local clergy and known demonologists for assistance in such cases.
The “6B” is the final and most dangerous kind of haunting of all time. This is the demonic entity that is intelligent, will communicate, and will try to kill people. These kinds of demons attach themselves to people and ultimately will try to possess them. Like people they have different cultures in which they have originated in and have been here since the beginning of time.
According to Lorraine Warren, famous demonologist who worked the famous and controversial Amityville case, this type of demon will also try to manifest itself as a human spirit that is trapped or lost. The most popular form they like to take is the form of a child, but there is always something disfigured and deformed with their appearance. For some reason, demons cannot perfect the human form because they have never been here as humans. They are also identified by making smells appear and disappear like sulfur, blood, feces, burning flesh, and even decay. They also like to bring nightmares and present themselves to children as a friend. Like the “6A” they will attack people and animals. They also feel like the people they are oppressing are their own personal property and will cause harm to anyone who tries to stop it.
How do we attract demons? There are many ways in which people bring them into their lives. Dabbling in the occult without proper study and training will attract them along with using things such as the Ouija board and conducting séances. Angry and abusive environments will attract them as well. They have been known to attach themselves to people and will follow them no matter where they move to. There have been cases throughout history where the demon enters the human body and takes possession over the person. The rite of deliverance or exorcism will need to be conducted to rid the person of the entity. Afterwards, the person is urged to make positive lifestyle changes to prevent the entity from returning much like trying to keep diabetes under control.
No matter where my team goes or what clients may call upon us for our services, there is a lot of investigation, interviewing and research that needs to be done for the case. Many times we do not know which “Class” of haunting we will be dealing with until we do the proper research. It can take days, weeks months and sometimes years to work a specific case. The paranormal field is like a box of kitty litter. You never know what you’re going to step in and one must always be prepared for the worst case scenario.
First of all, I'd like to start out by saying this is actually a paper I did for one of my college classes and I got an A on it as well as a kudos from the theology department (and I'm not even taking Theology hee hee)

Paganism (from Latin paganus, meaning "country dweller, rustic") is defined as being the blanket term given to describe religions and spiritual practices of pre-Christian Europe, and by extension a term for polytheistic traditions or folk religion worldwide seen from a Western or Christian viewpoint. The term has various different meanings, though, from a Western perspective, it has modern connotations of a faith that haspolytheistic, spiritualist, animistic or shamanic practices, such as a folk religion , historical polytheistic or neopagan religion. This would also encompass Wicca, Native American Spirituality and even Asatru. Asatru people prefer to be addressed as “heathen” to separate themselves from the rest of the pagan community.
Basically a pagan isn’t a label for just one religion. It’s actually a way of tribal life that existed before Christianity was introduced to Europe. It has been defined as a person who is close to the land. In the times of when Christianity was first introduced to Europe, this also meant the old religion of which embraced deities such as the Celtic god Wotan (who is also known as Odin or Woden throughout Scandanavia) and not embracing the Christian faith. They still hung onto the concept of a horned god of fertility and goddess mother figures. Ironically enough, in Christianity the “horned god” figure has become a symbol of evil known as Satan. Unfortunately, there was no solid, written text about the teachings within these older religions. Many of the stories that still exist about the gods have been passed down throughout generation to generation and the practices of the various rituals were kept within private circles when Christianity’s influence dominated the region. Many of the days which are celebrated within the pagan faiths are the solstices and equinoxes. These days were marked on ancient calendars kept by the people of that specific time. Each tradition has evolved from their early tribal days to set religions with their own rules, beliefs and laws today. Many pagans have acquired the label of “Witch”, which is taken from the old Anglo Saxon word “Wice” or “Wicce” that translates to sorcerer or magic user. In many cases throughout England and Northern Ireland the Gaelic word “Druid” or the Scandinavian word “Seit” which translates to “seer”; as per their practice of divination and shaman like duties was also used.
The druids were more than just mystical shaman like priests. In Celtic societies they also played the role of of priest, judge, scholar, and teacher. Like I mentioned earlier in this essay, little else is known about them and their practices. What is known is that the druids and the Celts were very savage and war like people; very much like the Vikings. One of their traditions that had been depicted in early drawings is the severing of an enemy’s head, impaled, and left to rot until Samhain where ale or mead was drank from it in honor of the fallen enemy. Other practices also included human sacrifice to the old gods along with animals. Today we do not live in a tribal society, and the word “pagan” has been “watered down” to a mere label that describes a person that bases their spiritual beliefs on those of the gods and goddesses of those ancient times.
Asatru is another religion that existed during the ancient pre Christian times. Asatru was an actual name given to the worship of the old Scandinavian and Germanic Gods. The Germanic and Scandinavian people were very much alike in lifestyle including the savage similarities between the Celts and the Vikings. The only difference is that the Asatru holidays are set on a different calendar and the worship of the gods was done through the means of a drinking horn and sometimes animal sacrifice known as “blot”. The “father god” they worshipped the most was the god Odin (who the Celts knew as Wotan or Woden). Later on, Asatru became official when the religion was recognized by the Icelandic government in 1972. People who practice the religion wish to be referred to as “Heathen” or “Tru-folk”, rather than “Pagan” because they feel it distinguishes them as being more affiliated with the Vikings and the Norsemen rather than the Celts, Druids and other faith groups that fall within the “pagan umbrella”. Although the two are very similar, in the aspect of the identities of the gods and goddesses mirroring each other, the holy days and ways of worship differ.
In the early 1950’s Gerald Gardner introduced a revival of the old religions with what is known as the Gardernarian Tradition of Wicca. Wicca is derived from the ancient word “Wicce” as well. He also published a written text known as “Witchcraft Today” . The book discusses some of the fundamental laws and rules that apply to the new religion of Wicca. Gardner embraced the old traditions, folklore, and even revived the concept of the horned god and the mother goddess. This is why many Christians confuse the concept of the “horned god” as Satan and associate the two together.
Gardner not only borrowed from the old Celtic folklore, he also researched the old Celtic calendar and named the days of celebration as “sabbats”. Gardner also implemented the concept of using an altar and various tools of practice much like Roman Catholicism. He also developed a set of rules and traditions. One of these rules is called the “Wiccan Rede”. It states “An ye harm none, do as thou will.” within its text. Gardner also included the old Hindu belief of Karma within the Wiccan religion. A law he called “The Tree Fold Law” states that your actions will come back to you three fold whether you do good or bad.
Although Wicca was a revival of the traditions of some very old European societies, not everyone adapted all of Gardner’s tradition or beliefs. Many took Wicca and implemented their own pantheon of gods and goddesses to the worship and rituals of Wicca and didn’t limit their worship to just one god and one goddess.
Other traditions of Wicca had sprung up over the years which also included Norse Wicca which use a drinking horn rather than a chalice and invoked the old Norse deities, and Dyanic Wicca which more of monotheistic belief that there is only a goddess. Dyanic Wicca had become very popular amongst the feminist community over the past decade. Many other people wished to not adapt the religion at all. They wanted to maintain the belief and worship of the old gods without all the rituals, rules and regulations that Wicca adheres to. In modern times, the community has the saying “All Wiccans are pagans, but not all pagans are Wiccans”. Neither spiritual path believed in a devil or a Satan. As a matter of fact, they don’t believe in Lucifer at all but still get a lot of intolerance from a lot of Christian churches; especially when 1971 happened.
In 1971 Aton Le Vay founder of the First Church of Satan, published a book entitled The Complete Witch (Republished in 1989 as The Satanic Witch). This struck outrage in the Wiccan community because Satan, being a Christian concept (and the Christian Church’s #1 enemy) , was now making his headway into the pagan community and associating himself with the witches! Wicca and paganism are “kissing cousins” because Wicca was born out of paganism, but the introduction of Satan into the “magical community” sparked more of a controversy because of the friction of belief systems. Not only that, the new “Satanic Witch” being present in the pagan community turned the “intolerance volume knob” up another few notches and created a mess of misunderstanding to anyone calling themselves a “witch” and wearing the ancient symbol of the pentagram which represents the connecting of all four elements, plus the spirit in the Wiccan world. Both religions worship a “horned god”, but the beliefs within that identity are like black and white only starting with one being a pre- Christian concept and the other being an entirely Christian concept. The Satanic Church jokingly states on their website “Satan is the best friend the Christian church has ever had. After all, he’s kept them in business for years.
Our ancestors of the old tribal times from around the world may have died off and evolved into what modern day society is, but their belief systems still exist within our communities even if it’s a reconstructed version. The next time you hear someone referring to themselves as a “heathen” or a “witch”, do not think they are insulting themselves. You may be in the presence of someone who knows the lost language of these ancient gods.
