I have been running my home-based business for two years now. I started by researching the type of business I wanted to go for, in terms of profit and demand ratios. I also made sure that my business is in perfect fit with my personality. Then I thought of a great name to represent my company, and went through having the business registered with Industry Canada.
Knowing that I will be dealing a lot with the American market, I obtained a tax account number from the IRS. I pay all my taxes in Canada, owing to an existing U.S.-Canada treaty. Nowadays, I do most of my work on a laptop in the comfort of my room--leaving my former officemates to struggle with the snow as they get to and leave work on a daily basis, while I enjoy the peace and quiet (and the reliable heating) of my new workplace.
I initially worked with Toronto.com to get me the customers and the publicity needed to make my business known (Archietech). But now that I have carved a name for myself, I use my own clout as a consultant to win customers while third-party softwares handle the invoicing and payment processing.
I'd say, not bad for someone who started his business with just a thousand bucks in his pocket! Now I am ready to share my invaluable experience with all those out there who are as ambitious as I am. I took my chances with doing business relying heavily on what the Net has to offer. Now I am reaping the demands of a kind of business that is likely to become the prototype for doing business in this new century!
