Have you ever met a person; and, they did not necessarily have the best of character or were particularly bright. But, for some reason, they appeared extremely lucky. They had a nice life and didn't want for anything. Yet, here you are kind, generous, struggling, trying to do everything right but seemingly having to fight uphill battles all your life. What's up with that? It's about reincarnation (when the soul, which is eternal and part of the spiritual realm, returns to the physical realm in a new body), karma, (working through whatever issues it has in each life and being continued in the next life/life's lessons/punishments/rewards etc.) and destiny (that to which one is to fulfill in the present life cycle). While these concepts are best known from Asian spiritual systems, (i.e. Buddhism, Hinduism) they have always been fundamental to African traditional spirituality, however, just less emphasized because considered givens by Africans. However, if one becomes an avid reader of African literature these concepts are spoken of throughout African traditional society. That is why we insist that these spiritual systems are inclusive to African vodun. We must come to understand that each person's journey in this life is specific to them. We should not compare ourselves to others because from the spiritual realm we all come to this realm based on reasons specific to who and what we may have been, are now and/or what we are destined to be. The thought that we were born of a set of parents deriving from a particular ancestry is just the tip of the iceberg. And, in order to discover these spiritual components, the only way one may find out emphatically is through authentic African divination by an ordained and reputable priest, priestess or diviner. The Ancestors are always and forever with us and assisting us along our Journey. We need only acknowledge and honor them. Ancestors known and unknown are never lost from us by way of DNA. Our Knowledge of them may fade but our connection to them is eternal.
Especially in times of great sadness and joy they are present and reach out to us.
The Holiday Season is a time when they are assured to be present.
Acknowledge them, speak of them, set a place for them and invoke their wisdom and traditions.
