Divination is another type of candle magic, but it is not dependent on color. In fact, you can even use an oil candle for some of these practices. There are two parts to candle divination: the smoke and the flame.
Smoke Color
Right after you light the candle, notice whether the smoke is black or white. Black smoke indicates that negative energy is being removed from the situation you’re praying about. White smoke signals that your prayer is being answered, but there may be some delays in order to align it with Divine timing (this means that you’ll understand why the holdups had to occur, in retrospect, after the prayer is answered).
Smoke Direction
In addition to the smoke’s color, notice its direction. When the smoke blows towards you, the angels are acknowledging that your prayers have been heard and are being answered. If the smoke blows away from you, then you’ll need to pray, focus, and work to attain your desired result. It may also indicate that a different outcome would ultimately be more advantageous for you.
Smoke blowing to your right indicates the need for further thought and more ideas to manifest your desires into reality. When the smoke blows to your left, you’re being guided to detach from the outcome if your prayers, wishes, and desired answers don’t align with the angels. Instead, ask for help and then trust that it will manifest in a way that exceeds your expectations.

Understanding the Flame
The most important part of the candle for divination is the flame itself. Your focus should be on whether it’s strong, weak, jumping, or bending. These characteristics give indications of the power of your manifestations and prayers and can provide you with yes or no answers. Flames fall into four categories:
Strong Flame
This type of flame means the answer to your question or prayer is, “yes.” It can also signify that your manifestations have a good flow of power and are working well. In addition, a strong flame may indicate a good harvest and abundance. This of course is the optimal time to hold positive thoughts and conduct angel magick rituals. You can work on them at any time, but when the candle flame is strong, you probably won’t have to repeat your blessing to obtain your desired results.
Weak Flame
These flames are generally considered a “no” answer when working with divination. It also means that your manifestations aren’t receiving their full power or concentration and may have to be repeated to achieve the desired results. If you continually have a weak flame when trying to work on a specific issue, consider abandoning it. Either you’re not committed to a particular outcome, or energies stronger than you are trying to manipulate it or maintain the status quo. A weak flame can also mean that your desires are being manifested extremely slowly, so have patience.
Jumping Flame
A jumping flame is one that literally leaps up and down on the wick. It can indicate that too much emotion or energy is involved and it’s not a good idea to hold your angel magick ritual at that particular moment. In divination, a jumping flame can also mean that the problem is too chaotic to be accurately foretold. This can be a potentially unpredictable time to hold ceremonies, although it may be quite powerful as well. With the energy roughly double that of the strong flame, you can work highly effective manifestations. Keep in mind, though, that you’re rolling the dice when the flame is jumping. Either you can succeed beyond your wildest dreams, or the manifestation of your desire can be seemingly blocked.
Bending Flame
When your flame bends, it’s either letting you know that other people are influencing your manifestations or that your angel magik ritual is attempting to help. Make doubly sure that you’ve cleansed and dressed your candles regularly if the bending flame crops up often. Holding angel magik rituals when your flame is bending has the potential for other people to exert influence over your intended outcome. When you desire a specific outcome, it will very rarely be the same as what another person wishes. You’ll, in effect, have two half results instead of a single full one.
