We all know that relationships take work. With the Two of Swords<\/a> in the \u201cPresent\u201d position, Diane\u2019s reading revealed that not only was she maintaining the status quo, she was actually pulling back her affections from Bill, resulting in a pattern of passive-aggressive behavior<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During their courtship, Bill had been spontaneous and romantic, once even whisking her off for an intimate weekend in Paris on a few hours\u2019 notice. And indeed, The Knight of Wands<\/a> in the \u201cPast\u201d position seemed to indicate that Bill\u2019s persona as the impetuous lover who had once swept her off her feet might be gone. The final card, The Hierophant<\/a>, signaled that life lived under the constraints of being \u201can old, married couple\u201d\u2014though not necessarily an unhappy one\u2014was pretty much what lay in store for them should they remain on their present trajectory.<\/p>\n

Fine-Tuning the Future<\/strong><\/p>\n

I could see that Diane had been hoping for something more, perhaps an indication of something she might try to spark a flame she longed to reignite. So to change things up, I asked her to look through the cards and pick the one that represented \u201cthe best possible outcome\u201d for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After perusing the deck, she quickly selected The Lovers<\/a>. \u201cI mean for me and Bill, of course,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Next, I asked her to shuffle the cards and told her to concentrate on a force that might bring about the future that she wanted. \u201cStop shuffling whenever you want to, and then cut the cards,\u201d I instructed her. I asked her to show me the card she\u2019d cut to. It was The Fool<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Diane looked at me, crestfallen. \u201cI guess it was foolish of me to think Bill and I could go back to being crazy in love,\u201d she sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not foolish at all,\u201d I explained. \u201cYou\u2019ve been waiting for Bill to set your world on fire. This card means it\u2019s just your turn to be the impetuous one.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Diane smiled at me, her head filling with possibilities. A weekend jaunt to Paris might not be feasible at the drop of a hat, but there were plenty of romantic surprises<\/a> a determined woman could pull off if she set her mind to it. And Diane was determined.<\/p>\n

Still, no change comes without risk. How would Bill respond to the role reversal? Would he feel threatened, or would it turn him on?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The tarot had revealed two paths to Diane: one that would maintain the current state of her affairs, and one that might well infuse the relationship she was in with a new level of passion. This information gave Diane the tools she needed to better shape her own romantic destiny. \u201cNo,\u201d she said after a moment\u2019s consideration, \u201cI think I prefer to see what Bill has to say.\u201d<\/p>\n
