Native American lore holds that the area was once called \u201cNawanda,\u201d perhaps a shortened version of \u201cTonawanda,\u201d which translates to \u201ca confluence of streams.\u201d Since water is scarce in the area, it\u2019s easy to extrapolate that the kind of streams referenced might easily have been spiritual, rather than corporeal.
